importing tcx from garmin training center

hello

I would like to move over my old training data from the abandoned Garmint Training Center. The data is exported in TCX-file which I could choose for upload in GC. But on 8 out of 10 cases I get an error message from GC: "An error occurred with your upload. Please try again."

I've also noted that the file size is limited to less than approx 50MB therefore I splitted the export data down to one month.

Any idea how to get the data moved?

  • I am using GTC v 3.2.1 for Mac OSX and since this is a 32bit application I will have to retire it in the next weeks (switching to a new OSX).

The data is from 2008, 2009 and 2010 (until November 2010). The data from 2010 is about 55MB (tcx-file) and GC reported that this is to big. So I have exported every month. Only 4 months data could be uploaded successfully, with the biggest being 2.7MB in size.

I will give it a try and export smaller parts but I won't do this work because that would take almost one day of work which is definitely too much.

  • if Garmin is offering an "export-to" and "import-from" function I would expect this function to work especially if both programs are from Garmin. We are living in the year 2021 and filesizes of 50MB are considered small. I don't understand why this can't be handled be GC.

  • just did one test: for the month August 2010 I've exported the activities in week-format. This file in month-format gets the error "upload failed". Now when uploading the week-files GC tells me that the first three weeks of that month are already uploaded! Only the last two weeks were missing.

So I assume that with all the uploads that failed some data has been imported but no one knows which. Unbelievable bad programming - no clean up just stuck in the middle. The user himself has to figure out and clean things.uploading weekly data (aug2010)

  • as you said we have high demands in "IT" functionality nowadays. So if an import routine doesn't get a confirmation or ok it should do a proper cleanup. Either all data has been received and stored or otherwise nothing should be stored. Just stopping in the middle and awaiting a time-out is not the way things are working today.

but I agree with you it was a nice exercise. I am old fashioned and in 2008 I was still printing my training records and analysis on paper. These then were put in a folder together with the competition maps (I'm doing orienteering).

Since I will delete GTC soon my intention was to move everything over to GC. Sure I will keep the exported files. Since they are in XML they are readable in some way.

    So let's enjoy christmas then.Sunglasses
