is it possible to simplify (size reduce) exported KML/GPX files?

I would like to export tracks in order to import them into Google Maps and create an overview of a recorded trip. Google maps limits the file size to 5MB. These files exceed that. I certainly don't need the full precision, and could decimate the stored points by a factor of 4 or 10 for example. It seems like both (1) Garmin connect should have a way to reduce precision on export, and (2) Google should have a way to reduce precision on import!

I could take extra steps to export then decimate using some third party approach, but that adds steps, complexity, and possibly exposes my data to yet another party. I would prefer if I could find a simple way to this upon export, which seems like a very reasonable feature to have.

  • True, some options for export GPX would be nice - for example an option to export laps' points.

Currently you can use some local converters like GPSBabel, this way a data probably won't be transferred to other party, as it's done locally on PC, it makes smaller files, something like a half, just done a test and: 800KB exported GPX vs. 380KB converted FIT to GPX.

  • Well this is a bummer. Seems like a pretty simple fundamental thing to do directly.
