VO2 max and training effect data in cycling

Garmin Connect gives me a VO2 max score in "All activities", but not in "Cycling". Also, I do not get any data the in "Training effect" category under "Cycling". The large majority (~95%) of my activities is indoor cycling using a Tacx smart trainer, other activities are outdoor cycling and an occasional walk. Until recently, I did not record heart rate data on my indoor cycling, but since about 10 days I do. So now all indoor cycling activities have power, cadence, heart rate and speed data. I am using the Windows Tacx desktop app connecting to my Vortex trainer and vivoactive 4 watch.

Am I expecting to see results to soon (with only 10 days of full data)? Am I not using the right equipment? Or is there some other reason why I am not seeing this?

  • The main requirements for getting VO2 max for cycling are that you use a power meter and heart rate monitor (wrist heart rate, chest strap or similar)

Vivoactive 4 is not compatible with power meters so you must log the activity with the Tacx app to get VO2 max for cycling. Do you see the power logged in the activity that is saved in Garmin Connect?

  • Yes, I do. I use the Windows Tacx desktop app, and every ride has speed, heart rate, cadence and power stats.

  • I've tried to find info about which data you will get from the Tacx app and I can't verify that you will get VO2 max that way. Training load should work, but VO2 max is calculated on the device and I can't find that the Tacx app is doing that.

  • something has changed in the last couple of weeks with VO2 max. I used to get an overall VO2 max that was significantly lower than my cycling VO2 max. Now, both equal my cycling VO2 max. Now, I know that my running VO2 max is lower than my cycling as I have other problems with running. Garmin now is trying to tell a little fib or lie that my running VO2 max suddenly caught up to the cycling VO2 max over night. This is not true. I am still the same person wit the same real VO2 max for running. Garmin alsto calculates myu possible 10k run time based on the cycling VO2 max, not the running VO2 max
