Menu items edit/star/share/lock missing on activity imported using tcx / can not change gear

For two day now I have a problem with activities imported from a tcx file. There are two obvious problems, the first problem is that the icons

for edit/star/share/lock functions are not displayed  in the chrome browser (Windows and Android) and for this reason it is impossible to edit the data in Garmin Connect Web, the data can be edited in Garmin Connect Android. The second problem is that there is no gear indication and gear can not be changed.

I just noticed that ALL historic imported activities show the same problem, even the activities I edited recently.

  • Yup, that diagnosis and solution worked for me, too!  Many thanks for researching and posting!

As others have reported it's the creator tag in either the FIT file or TCX file that causes the issue. If it's missing or the creator is not a legitimate Garmin device you don't get to edit or export your activities in Garmin Connect.

The https://www.fitfiletools.com/#/changer#view website solves this beautifully and as mentions, above, ensuring the Creator tag (with a valid Garmin device) is present in the TCX will solve that for TCX files, too.

NB: This solution only works for new uploads to Garmin Connect, any historical ones now seem to be stuck in the non-editable / exportable state Unamused

  • Is there any Garmin oficial response?

  • Not yet. Yesterday I sent in a support case to Garmin Product Support via email.

  • Thank you for taking this up, I have been unable to attend to this problem over last 24 hours because my internet connection was down for an upgrade.

Not exactly correct, currently this problem occurs in Garmin Connect Web but not in Garmin Connect Mobile Android. In the Android version I can edit all imported files but the developers made it very awkward to update calories due to the use of a badly crafted widget. Updating calories is needed (since a few days) because the imported data (under Windows) does show calories (in Android) but does not show the value in the activity summary/totals.

Try clicking on the value. That will bring up the keyboard and you can write any value you like.

I did, I used my finger, I used a pen, I used a mouse, nothing comes up. All that can be done is to wipe up and down to change the value.

  • Maybe it is something with the implementation Samsung has made that breaks function.

I don't have a field named "Calories". I see "Calories burned". Which activity type?

  • Cycling activity imported using tcx, changed to indoor cycling (ergometer) using web, then open activity in android version, edit activity, Show More Data, Scroll down, after Max Bike Cadence, before Avg Heart Rate, is Health Stats Calories.

  • Thank-you, ErnstBK, that's a useful clarification. I should've been clear I was talking entirely about using Garmin Connect Web.
My specific scenario is that I import an activity to Garmin Connect Web as a FIT file from a non-Garmin device and then want to export it as a TCX file. As far as I can tell I can't use Garmin Connect on iOS to either import a FIT file or export a TCX file. Hence needing to use Garmin Connect Web exclusively. (The reason for doing all this is I use a variety of devices, including Garmin ones, and Garmin Connect Web wasn't a bad platform for bringing all my activities together.)

My limited poking around trying to extract data from Garmin Connect seems to support the original theory that if it didn't come from a Garmin device it's now stuck in Garmin Connect.
