Duplicated activities

Since late this week, my activities keep on duplicating. The 2 rides I did yesterday were first 4 rides but are now 6 rides. What's going on? I have used this device for about a year, only started getting problematical this week, did you change anything?

Device is a Garmin Edge 520 Plus and I sync via my Android phone. Looks like every time I sync, I have more rides. Nice to 'earn' my badges and meet my challenges, not good really and completely unnecessary, IMO. Lots of people seems to have this issue, please fix this bug Garmin. How difficult is it to spot a duplicate, really!

  • Assume you have just the one Edge 520 Plus device and no other devices, power meters, etc. And no other phones/tablets/computers sending data? There are certain parameter checks that Garmin goes through before allowing an activity to be logged, such the timestamp. So likely there is something slightly different about these duplicated rides.

If you could zip and post the fit files from a days worth of duplicated rides, we might be able to dig a little deeper.

  • Only one device tracking the activity, for cycling this is my Edge 520..This has always been the case. I've deleted the duplicates of course as they are messing with my data.
You realize that I can only attach images or video in this forum, no zip files of my activities?
Attached is a bundle of 3 ZIP files renamed as JPG to fool the forum

    • Zip the file, then in a reply post Insert >> Image/video/file >> click Upload >> browse for file >> OK.

You can also drag and drop a zipped file onto your reply post

    • Or upload the fit file to a file sharing service, such as OneDriveGoogle DriveDropbox, etc., then share a link to the file in your post.
  • Can't really see much there since these are not duplicates. When it happens again, if possible, before deleting the duplicates, zip and upload the original and the duplicates so we can compare.

Looks like they all are using an Edge 520, cadence sensor, bike speed sensor, and Varia light.

  • I have an older Instinct original, and a new FR 55, Connect on an Android Pixel, and Express on Win10. Twice now I've had an activity duplicate, most recently I had yesterday's FR 55 recorded activity duplicate when I connected it to Express in Windows. I also had no HR activity record yesterday, despite wearing the FR 55 non-stop. Something very wrong is going on.

I also just earned a walking badge I do not deserve, as a result - really bad! :-(

  • I am getting duplicates as well. Fenix 5X and software 22.40. Upload by sync at home or GC mobile in the field. I record activities daily and this is new the last few days or since that last update to 22.40. I deleted the duplicates without affecting the remaining activity. The duplicating has occurred with trail running, cycling and even walking.

  • I wouldn't be phased by this issue, as I'd hope it'll be sorted eventually. But I'm earning distance badges I didn't actually do the work for, and that rubs me the wrong way. The whole point of goals for me, is motivation. This bug has annihilated that good feeling.

  • Me three.  My Fenix 6S Pro, V16.70 is my sole tracker at this time, and no changes to firmware or sensors happened between the last normal records and the first duplicates.  I typically record one to three activities every day, and from Wednesday to Friday, each activity shows as the original and the edited version.  So I assigned an Event Type, adjusted my gear, and edited the title as usual, I now see that version of the activity in addition to the unedited version.  This is true for Treadmill, Strength, and even Yoga activities.  My method of upload is generally to sync my Fenix to my iPhone, which runs the Connect App, and then periodically ensure that my phone syncs to the server.  I log in almost every day to edit my activities.  It's not obvious in the screenshot below, but the displayed activity timestamps of the dupes are the same.  It makes sense that the modification times would differ for each record, and this may be the root of the problem...

I didn't record anything on Saturday, as it was the celebratory rest day after one year of no days off.  I recorded two Treadmill runs today, and they haven't duplicated in the Web app, but I didn't edit them yet.  I was hoping that Garmin would fix this bug and I could limit the scope of the damage.  For the moment, I'm keeping all of the activities with the expectation that Garmin will provide guidance that is posted to this thread.

Garmin, if you're listening, please advise with the best way to handle these duplicates without losing our legitimate activities.  Sweat smile

  • I have noticed an increase in duplicated activities recently (it has always happened but not as often as the last week or so). I am using an Instinct (v15.10). I just delete duplicates and the next time I do a same activity type (or just create a dummy one and then delete that later as well) challenge stats update (ie are now accurate).
