kilojoules

Is there a way to show kilojoules instead of calories - just brought a Garmin watch and found it was not an option? - as far as i can see? please advise

  • 100% in SA exactly the same we see Joules on food labels.

  • Cars, bicycles and other transportation measure energy in Watts so it would be easier to make meaningful use of the energy burnt on fitness watches.

Hate to be pedantic, but watt is a unit of power, not energy. Power is rate of energy produced or used, and 1 watt = 1 joule per second. In contexts where watts are primarily used, energy is often expressed in watt-hours rather than joules. e.g. 1 watt-hour = 1 watt x 3600 seconds = 3600 joules. If you turned on a 60 W lightbulb for 1 hour, most people would probably say that the energy used is 60 watt-hours, not 216 kilojoules.

I'm sure in your case it was just a typo, but I see the media conflating power and energy all the time. Like there'll be some headline about a record peak power demand (in X watts) but they'll describe it as a record energy demand. Yeah, technically "record energy demand" isn't wrong, but it's less accurate than "record power demand". Out of context, a record energy demand doesn't mean much unless it's for a given period of time.

Makes just as much sense as someone asking "how far is it from New York to Denver" and someone else replying "60 miles per hour."

Having said all that, I wish Garmin Connect had better options for stuff like this. Another longstanding feature request is to have mixed units for distance/speed and weight in Garmin Connect (e.g. for Canadian users who use km for distance and pounds for weight.)

Never tried it (using metric units only), so am not sure whether it is functional, but in the device settings (Settings » System » Format » Units) of my Instinct 2, I can set up many units independently. Not the Calories / kJ though. Since those are device settings, I guess it won't have necessarily an impact on Garmin Connect, but it definitely looks like Garmin works on enhancing the option for units, and that similar possibility will appear in GC sooner or later too.

  • Thanks, it's been possible to use mixed units on devices for a long time, which is why I specifically mentioned Garmin Connect.

As users have been asking for mixed units in GC for over ten years (based on the age of some of the threads in the forums), I'm not going to hold my breath.
