Extract activities from multi-sport file

Can someone help extract the activities from a multi-sport file? I have a triathlon file recorded as multisport and I just need the swim, transition 1, bike, transition 2, and run extracted as 5 separate fit files that will load into Garmin Connect. Any volunteers willing to help?

  • If you are syncing to Strava it will be separated into different activities for you since Strava doesn't support multisport activities and you can download the FIT files from there. I don't know if the transitions will be its on activities.

  • In my experience, this isn't correct. As you suggested I downloaded the FIT file from Strava for the swim activity and it includes the entire race - not just the swim.

Can someone who has access to Fit File Repair Tool (or some other effective tool) please offer to help do the simple extraction of 5 activities from the multisport fit file? I would be very grateful!

  • And I tried the same thing with Training Peaks, which also lists each activity separately (not as a single multisport activity). Same thing - downloading the FIT file downloads the full race in a single fit file. Also not a solution.

  • You are absolutely right. I wonder how that works? If you export the FIT file from Strava and then import it again it will probably create several new activities again.

If you export the GPX file from Strava it will only contain one part of the full activity.

  • The GPX file from Strava includes the whole race too.

  • It didn't for me when I tested. I imported the GPX to Garmin Connect and only got one part. When I view the GPX in a text editor it only contains one part of the multisport activity.

I did a new test with a swim run. I exported the FIT file and the GPX for the first swim segment. The FIT file contains the full race and the GPX only contains the first swim segment.

  • In your second paragraph - was your export of the GPX file from Strava or from Garmin Connect? Does a GPX file still include all of the relevant performance data that is stored in the fit file (power, pace, HR, cadence)?

  • I export all from Strava.

I don't know if all data is there. Test and see if you get what you want.

One important note about GPX files is that those activities don't count for badges.

  • Thanks for the suggestions e7andy. I'll try anything to get this resolved properly! Unfortunately, exporting GPX from Strava and then reimporting into Garmin Connect is not a useful solution for me for the following reasons:

    - When importing the swim and run activities (that's all I've tried so far), both activities come in to GC as unspecified activities - there is no way to specify in the swim activity that I want pace in MM:SS/100 yds, or specify that it should be treated as a swim. Miles per hour isn't helpful here. Speed on the run is MPH too, not MM:22 per mile as is standard for runs, and no way to specify that it is a run, not just "fitness" or "race."

-The run somehow is reduced to 12.53 miles from 13.1 in the conversion.

-Swim lacks strokes per minute (which is in the multisport FIT file).

-Run lacks cadence (which is in the multisport FIT file)

-The run is lacking the Stryd power data that is stored in the multisport FIT file that is essential to my GC records.

  • Again - Fit File Repair Tool will apparently do a straight extraction of the 5 activities from the multisport file, and retain all of the info from the original fit files. It states it supports this in its FAQ. That is simply what I am trying to accomplish. Anyone here have access to Fit File Repair Tool? (I do not because I am on a Mac.)
