ForeRunner 405CX missing start of every activity

I was never really bothered by this before, but I thought I would ask anyways.

I cycle about an hour every day, and every time I download the activity to my PC,

I seem to be missing the first 10-15 minutes  (sometimes more, sometimes less ).

I don't think its the Garmin itself ( ForeRunner 405CX ),  but rather something with Garmin Express Application.

I always get a satellite lock before starting, and the time and distance work correctly.

When I download the activity, the full map of my course is properly displayed, all my lap times and elevation info per lap seem to be correct,

but the activity summary is off .  It will be missing a seemingly random amount of time at the start of the course, which affects my total moving time

and other averages.  The bar graphs are also truncated to only show the latter part of any course.

It looks like the first 10-20 minutes of any activity is missing from Garmin Express window display,

but the data is clearly captured (properly) by the Garmin 405CX device itself.

I always update the Garmin Express App , and am currently running the latest version ( 7.5.0)

I thought it might have been a satellite accuracy thing,  but I tried to let the watch get a GPS lock for 20 minutes

before starting my run, ...  but nothing changed.

Not sure what else to try.

I'm not too flummoxed because the data I want is properly captured,

but the summary stats and graphs are wrong.

Any ideas...?

Thanks

  • Could you zip then post a sample tcx file from an activity? If I recall, since the 405CX was from 2009, it was limited to .tcx files instead of the newer .fit file format?  Might ultimately need a reset to factory defaults.

  • I don't know how to download .TCX files,
so I'm including a few pictures of what I'm seeing on Garmin Express...

In this picture, you see the full circuit I cycled.
The section with the dark blue line, is what was missed.

When you look at the time, I cycled for 44:30 mins,
but my moving time is only 30:07 ( 14 minutes missing )

On the charts, you see the elevation is measured from the beginning,
but the speed is only recoded after 5+ KM ,  which is the missing 14 minutes.

This picture is the same at the one above,
but the charts are showed by time rather than distance.

Here you only see the 30 minutes of moving time .
The first 14 minutes are missing
(even for the Elevation, which was displayed correctly when viewing by distance )

This picture is the same as the first one,
but showing LAPS instead of "Stats"

You can see that each laps has a measured time, avg speed, and elevation,
yet "moving time" says "0" .
(...which is odd because Avg. Speed is 20Km/h + for all laps where "moving time" is 0  )

So I don't know if the problem is with my 405CX, or with the Garmin Express App.

Also of note,  in many of my circuits, the moving speed starts to work after
a noticeable change in direction .  ( see where the dark Blue line changes to yellow ) .

This happens frequently ,  which would seem to indicated a GPS/Satellite issue.

    ... I'm so confused !   ;-)
