Please help me understand why my "% of max" HR readings seem off

Hi there:

I have a Fenix 3 and use Garmin Connect Web to view the data.

I have manually set my max HR on the watch to 190 for running.

Often, my post-run "% of max" HR reading on Connect shows that I've exceeded 100% of my max during the run, even though I know that's not right..

Today, for example, I registered a 171 max heart rate on my run. I am told by Connect that rate represents "104% of max."

How can that be if I have manually entered the max as 190? SHouldn't that be 90% of my max? (171/190 = .9)

Am I not interpreting this stat correctly? Or is Garmin not using the max HR I have asked it to?

Thanks for any insight you might offer me.

Tim

  • If you look at the Time In Zones tab in Garmin Connect Web, you can see what zones GC thinks you've got set. Unfortunately this doesn't show max HR (anymore), but you can at least see if the zones themselves are close to what you expect.

If they don't match what you expect, check GC and your watch to see if the zones match up. Depending on your watch, you may also have sport-specific zones for running, swimming and cycling.

Your HR zones can be found in GC under

[Watch Icon (upper right hand corner] > [Your Device] > Device Settings > User Settings

    e.g.

  • Thank you Will--that was very helpful. I found my max HR setting using the path that you described, and it was set to 167.

I had never set that value. I changed it to 190.

Makes me wonder what was the purpose of me inputting the correct value on the watch in the first place if it wasn't going to be recognized/used by GC.

Not being a wise guy--just curious.

    Best,

    Tim

  • No worries! Hopefully that fixes your issue going forward.

Well the value you input on the watch is supposed to work -- in theory haha.

In reality Garmin has always had some random issues here and there with syncing certain settings between GC and the device. So sometimes you wanna do a sanity and just make sure that whatever you think was synced was actually synced.
