Garmin group, fake members?

Recently I started a running group for my locality. And sure enough from time to time people join and we are now with 8 members.

But strangely enough I got a notification when someone joined with only four members. The other three joined silently.

And also these three that joined silently don't sync their run data with the group: while the other five (including me) regularly post runs and are ranked in the leader-board, these other three are not.

Lastly, the three silent members have locked down profiles, so I can't check anything about them...

Could they be fake accounts? Do other people in groups see similar ghost accounts?

  • Could they be fake accounts?

Not sure what you mean by "fake accounts", and why they should be faked, but there is no reason to suspect any wrongdoing. The concerned accout owners simply use the defult privacy settings, and hence their activities and profiles are not visibe to anyone but themselves. There may be two main reasons behind it - either they do not even know they have to change the privacy level to "My Cnnections and Groups" (globally or individually), or they do not wish publishing their data.

  • True. Leaves the question; why did I not get a notification when they joined the group, as I did with the others.

And... why would you join a local run group and *not* share your stats...?

Side question; is Garmin actually taking the groups feature seriously? Are they developing it still? Or do they expect everyone to move to Strava and get their social sport fix there?

  • True. Leaves the question; why did I not get a notification when they joined the group, as I did with the others.

Probably due to the privacy settings too

And... why would you join a local run group and *not* share your stats...?

Most people have no idea that they have to change their privacy setting to have their Activities and Steps visible by others. Others (myself including), do no wish to be perfmanently tracked in open groups accessible by anyone who wants to join, and only share some important activities, up and then.

Side question; is Garmin actually taking the groups feature seriously? Are they developing it still?

You best ask them directly. We can only speculate here, on the user forum. I'd tell that yes, since there are frequent changes in the functionlity. However, their main focus is certainly the direct support of their devices, and the processing of the data from the devices.

  • I have had a similar experience with connection requests. I don't share any personal info or photos of myself, yet I have had connection requests on Garmin and Strava. Most recently on Garmin connect I had a connection request from a young lady, allegedly in the US, and her only recorded activities are very suspicious. Run for 100m- 6min, Meditation for 5 mins, literally starting 10days ago and a very short activity recorded every day during this time, no GPS, seems very suspicious! Definitely some folks making connections in order to manipulate or take advantage, in some way, further  down the line. I have obviously accepted these connections/follow requests to see what happens and will report back here if anything dodgy goes on:0)

  • I'd just delete them from you Group. Change how to join to either by invitation only OR by Approval Required. Then they must go thru the owner of the group

  • I wonder the same thing. It's difficult to navigate to the Group site. Half my connections have accepted their invitation but remain connections. Trux does a superb job trying to keep this all togeter. Garmin can most certainly afford a few I.T. people dedicated to the memberships and groups. Like for instance YOGA is randomly offered. Why is that not a regular activity?? Why are their ANY limits on how many times you can win a badge?? It costs them NOTHING but these ridiculous imposed limitations discourage members when they reach their limit. I have 18 connections/ 9 are Group members. Everyone has been invited. I've uninvited, refreshed phone and re-invited to no avail. I spend time encouraging each member, sharing my email if they should have difficulties. GARMIN COULD/SHOULD MAKE THIS MUCH EASIER. I realize they are involved in many BIG PROJECTS and maybe the fitness aspect has been pushed aside. I'm Cubby, Walking with Cubby is our Group name. Thank you
