Intensity minutes as a runner

I run three times a week and my intensity minutes are logged (mostly as vigorous) When I go for a wal though, even if I'm walking briskly (3.5mph) very few intensity minutes are logged. Is there any way of finding out what Garmin classes as an intensity minute? I know you have to be walking/running  for at least 10 minutes and your heart rate raised, but us there anyway of finding out how much by?

  • The algorithm may differ from model to model. On some models you can assign a HR Zone to the the Intensive and Vigorous Minutes, hence it is customizable. On other watches, the threashold is roughly 150% of your Resting HR for Intensive Minutes, and roughly 200% of RHR for Vigorous Minutes. And yet on other models, the levels may be derived from the Lacate Threshold measured with the HR Variability. And on models without a HRM, the algorithm uses the acelerometer and GPS to detect your cadence and speed. However, I believe that currently the system using the HR / RHR ratio is the most common.

  • Thank you, that's useful to know.
