Walk Activity & Dog Walk Activity Both Show Up In Connect As "Walk" Is this fixable?

Hello All!

I used the Vivoactive HR to add a Custom Activity from the list of activities. It is named "Dog Walk". I also have the default "Walk" as one of the activities.

When I Dog Walk, I'll tap the "Dog Walk" selection on the tracker. When I regular walk, I tap "Walk". But...

Both activities show up as "Walk". "Dog Walk" is never on the list in Connect. (Mobile Andorid & Web Mac OS)

For Example: A Dog Walk will show up as "Detroit Walk". A Regular Walk will show up as "Detroit Walk". So both kinds of walks show up in Connect as walks.

Is there a way to have Dog Walk show in Connect as "Dog Walk" instead of "Walk"? I sure could not figure this one out.

Thank You for sharing your knowledge. It's much appreciated.

Please Enjoy Today!
Paul

  • You can change the titles in the settings [https://connect.garmin.com/modern/settings] under "Activity name".

You should probably use "Location & Device Activity Name".

  • Thanks e7Andy for taking time to reply.

I changed the settings as you mentioned, but Dog Walks are still "Detroit Walks" & regular Walks and also "Detroit Walks" (or whatever city I'm in).

As always, I can manually edit the names in Connect as usual, but I was hoping that Dog Walks would show as Dog Walk. This helps me later when I look and forget what walk it was.

To note: When I do a "Run" activity, it shows as a run, a Bike is a bike, it's just that both types of walks are simply walks.

I'm sure stuck on this one.

The setting that advised will influence only activites done after the change. It won't change the names of the past activities.

  • Thanks Trux for taking time to reply & mention the after-the-fact change. I appreciate your help.

Oddly, even after making the change that e7Andy suggested, when I tell the tracker do track a "Dog Walk" new activities still all show up as a regular walks. (Example: "Detroit Walk")  Regular walks also show up as regular walks (Example: "Detroit Walk").

Maybe it's a glitch particular to the Vivoactive HR version that I own.

My clumsy work-around has been to log into Garmin Connect and look at each walk. If I can't remember which type of walk an activity was, I'll check the "Pace" metric. If the "Pace" metric is relatively smooth & steady, the activity was a regular walk. If I see that  "Pace" has a bunch of stops, it was a Dog Walk. Next, I edit the title of each individual activity from, for example, "Detroit Walk" to "Dog Walk" or something specific to the walk.

  • Can you verify whether the setting Activity Name is still set to "Location & Device Activity Name", and did not flip back to the original value? Then sync the watch first, then start a dummy activity of the custom type "Dog Walk" for a few seconds, save it, and share the link here, so that we can have a look.

  • Success!

This morning I did a "Dog Walk" and on Garmin Connect Web and Garmin Connect Mobile, the Dog Walk was titled "Detroit Dog Walk". Next, i did a regular walk. It showed up as a regular walk. All is good in Garminland.

I don't know why until today Connect had Dog Walks as Walk, even after I made the changes that e7Andy was kind enough to provide, but today's the tracker and Connect are happy. Maybe the tracker heeded a day or two to educate itself.

Thank You Both for helping & educating me. I very much appreciate the time you both took to help out.

Please Find Time To Enjoy This Day!

Normally it is instant. I re-tested it just before my previous post. And I think even the sync to the device is not necessary, since the naming happens on the server, not on the device. So I do not know why it did not work initially, but suspect the change was either not saved, or you accidentally started the wrong type. Never mind, what is important is that it works as it should now.
