Garmin Edge 830 and Calories Burned

Does the Garmin Connect app factor Wind Speed into the Calories Burned calculation when tracking cycling activity?

  • If you use a heart rate monitor, then yes, since the headwind will result in increased HR + decreased HRV, and hence in increased Calorie burn, while the tailwind will have the opposite effect.

Similarly it will work also if you use a power meter - headwind » more power » more Calories, tailwind » less power » less Calories

More on the topic also here: [How is Bike Weight Factored in Calorie Burn Calculation for Edge Cycling Computers?] - although it speaks about the bike weight, the principle is identical for any other factors like wind, tire size and pressure, dirt, or anything else influencing your performance and hence the Calorie burn.

BTW, it is not Garmin Connect where the Calories are calculated. It is happening directly on the device in real-time.
