Why doesn’t my recovery heart rate get saved to Garmin Connect?

I found out from the Venu forum that if you wait 2 minutes after pressing stop on an activity (but before saving), the recovery heart rate pops up after 2 minutes. I was pretty excited to see this feature.  Why doesn’t it get saved to Garmin Connect?  Seems like I shouldn’t have to write it down each time?.....

It does get saved Slight smile Just, for some strange reason Garmin thinks it is of no interest for users, hence they do not display it. However, if you do not mind some work, you can view the value relatively easily:

    1. Open the Activity page in GC Web and hit the F12 key to open DevTools in the browser (works with most browsers, but in doubts use Chrome)
    2. In the DevTools click the Network tab and in the left pane search for the numeric name identical to the ID number of the activity as seen in the address line of the activity page. There shouls be around four lines with this nmeric name. Typically it is the second one that is of interest, so select it (if the #3 does not work on this one, try the others)
    3. Click the Preview tab at the top of the main window, and expand the value summaryDTO, and there should be the value recoveryHeartRate

You may also consider suggesting Garmin to add the value to the Activity HR stats: [Submitting an Idea to Garmin]

  • Thanks so much for this!  I found it.
mill definitely put in a feature request.

  • Thanks for this! My watch doesn't save RHR to the activity file :(, but if anyone wants a one click solution for this, I made a small script that can be installed as a bookmark.

    Installation

    1) Get script from here:

    https://pastebin.com/P0kM4dAb

Copy the script contents to your clipboard: Scroll to bottom of page, click on "RAW Paste Data" box, CTRL/CMD-A, CTRL/CMD-C

    2) Open this page: https://caiorss.github.io/bookmarklet-maker/

2a) Set title to "GC RHR"

2b) Paste script into "Code" box

    2c) Click "generate bookmarklet"

2d) Drag blue bookmarklet to bookmarks bar. If the bookmarks bar isn't visible, press CTRL/CMD-SHIFT-B.

If you don't have a bookmark bar or you're on mobile, select and copy the contents of Output box, bookmark any site at all, edit the bookmark, then paste what you just copied into the Address/Location/URL box. (In Firefox you can also right-click and select "Bookmark this link")

    Usage after Installation

    1) Sign into Garmin Connect

    2) Open the activity you're interested in

    2) Click on "GC RHR" bookmark.

Possibly you just do not wait long enough. You have to wait minimally 2 minutes after stopping the activity, before saving the file, in order to have the RHR measured and logged.

  • I've seen the recovery HR pop-up many times, and taken screenshots for posterity.

I've also heard ppl talking about a "recovery heart rate" pause menu item on newer watches, which my 935 does not have.

After I read this post, I went for a run and obtained the RHR pop-up on purpose, then saved the activity.

I'm pretty sure the activity doesn't have the RHR -- at least not in the GC network request. I converted the FIT file to CSV and I don't see it.

    What watch do you have?

  • What watch do you have?

    Instinct, the basic model (non-solar)

  • Yep, that's a lot newer than 935 (released 2017).

Does your activity pause menu also have "Recovery Heart Rate" (I assume it would only show up once you actually obtain one)?

EDIT: now that I have a newer watch, I see that I had it backwards. The pause menu's recovery heart rate item is actually what you select in order to obtain a recovery heart rate rate, not the other way around. When you select it, you get a 90 second countdown, during which time the watch measures your heart rate. At the end of the coutdown, it reports the final HR and the difference between start and final, and saves both of the values to your FIT file. (Some people don't see these values in Garmin Connect, but you can always see them if you use https://www.runalyze.com, which is free and syncs with your Garmin Connect account.)

  • Yes, I do have the RHR in the Activity Stop menu
