Running VO2 Max - difference between Forerunner 945 and 920XT - why??

I have been using a 920XT for 4 years and have consistently had a Running VO2 Max in the range 48-50

I have just done my first run using a new 945 and the VO2 Max is showing as 43

In the last 4 years I have run 1000 miles +/- each year and I've been running 3-5 times per week

There was no break in training pattern between using 920XT and 945

I'm 60 years old - so both scores are good for my age group

But why the sudden drop?

Is there a different calculation used on the 945?

Or was the 920XT calculation inaccurate?

  • Having exchanged garmin watches several times in the past few years I can tell that a new watch needs some time to learn your vo2max. A single run is not enough. Expect it to stabilise at your normal vo2max after some 10-20 runs. All that on the assumption that your parameters (max hr, rest hr, age, weight) are set up the same way as they were on your old watch.

  • Yep - all data set up exactly as before - I'll give a while and see if it recalculates. Thanks.
