Swim Calories Bug

So I wanted to bring the up here and see if others have had the same issue, or would now check out their watches the next time they swim. Basically you have a daily summary of active and metabolic calories. then you do a workout and it gives you your activity calories (which includes metabolic). After the activity you r summary would include these calories...but the numbers don't even come close to adding up. THIS IS ONLY IN SWIM MODE, running and strength work as they should.

I have had this problem with three different 945 watches, Garmin has replaced two now for other reasons (well and this one). The issue is in pool swim and open water swim. It's not the watch, it's clearly a programming bug.

Below is an example (without the images) that I sent to Garmin (one of many), for you to read. I hope it makes sense.

Anybody else get this? Thanks, Pear.

I have todays example for you with my updated software.
I took a photo of my time on the watch before I went to the pool deck 17:36, then I took a photo of my Calories used by that point in the day 2700 total and 1312 active.
Then I swam for the time and calories shown in the photos..so again 673 calories (yes active and metabolic).
Then after my calorie count (right after the shower) was 3044 and 1535 active.
SO:
total calories was 2700 to 3044…344 difference
Active calories was 1312 to 1535…223 difference
But my watch says in that hour+ I uses 673??? Again I use less than 80 calories an hour metabolic.
You keep needing more examples of something I have been saying since January. Honestly there is a programming error. The numbers don’t add up.
Oh I used my Tri Chest Heart rate monitor as always. In the past I was asked to test with the wrist heart rate…same thing. I tested in Open water mode….same issue. I dont have the issue with running or strength work outs. The swim mode is faulty!!
  • I should also add, yesterday with a new watch...my pre swim active calorie was 130 used, then swam for 3 km and had 650 calories used...afterwards, active calories was only 250. SO again, only 120 active calories....just another example.

  • Hello, I don't think that it is faulty, it is by design, that the swimp profile uses a different algorithm than how the other activity profiles calculate calories. I've attached an article from our website that says the calorie counting is different for the swim profile than any of the other activity profiles. How Are Calories Calculated While Swimming with a Fitness Watch?

  • Thanks for your answer, but respectfully I am not challenging at all how calories are counted. The link has no relevance to the problem. I too had to clear this with Garmin.

The watch told me what it calculated, i have photos, but what I am challenging is how it adds them to the daily summary. Don't tell me you ate 3 apples and then 5 are missing. Unless you can prove the other 2 were stolen. You know what I mean...I know bad analogy?

I have a new suspicion, if I put manual activity (as I did when I sent my watch back) it labels a 1 hour swim as 350 calories...including Metabolic. So the watch may tell you it calculated 650 but then default to the pre programmed 350 for summarizing?

  • So the watch may tell you it calculated 650 but then default to the pre programmed 350 for summarizing?

I did not real carefully all the details, but manually entered Calories are indeed not included in the daily totals. Only the values calculated by the watch are included.

  • Sorry, again...this is a hypothesis. My original post has nothing to do with manual input activities (as I was later talking about) or manual inputed calories (as you mentioned).
