Segments Leaderboard (should include past data as well)

Hello

This is a suggestion for the segments leaderboards.

It would be much more interesting if the leaderboard data was populated with all activities not only from the date of creation of the segment, but include all past activities as well.

I hope Garmin can consider this upgrade.

Thanks !

  • I hope Garmin can consider this upgrade.

I do not think so, they would have to reparse perhaps a billion of old activities of all those millions of users. That would be prohibitively expensive, and would likely crash their servers anyway.

However, nothing prevents you from checking for new segments on your old activities manually, if you are really interested how they rank on the new segments.

  • That's exactly how segments worked. They removed auto scan of all activities in 2019, together with Edit option (earlier, after edit, all activities were scanned again). You can still see old info including edit date, which is useless for new segments as those can't be edited anymore:

    # people crossed this segment # times since it was created on ## ###, ####. Edited on ## ###, ####

Currently segments can be only renamed or removed. And you can click Match New Segments in each older activity to scan it.

Earlier, there were some problems with new matching, but now this seems to be fixed. I tried scanning again my 57 KM activity from 2019 and it finally showed 64 segments matched. With new scan feature, in 2019 and 2020 that new scanning was returning zero segments for that activity.

So at least it looks working properly now, but of course it's still not as nice as before.

Highly unlikely they restore old auto scan feature as for sure they removed it to lower computations. But a better idea to do it, could be to keep auto scan, but with less frequent scans. Old and new scans - start instantly. It could be done instantly only for newest last week activities, and scan once a day or less for older. This would lower computations with also keeping auto scan.
