Keeping Power Data from Uploading to Strava

I ride a Giant eMtb which has a built in power meter. Is there a way to prevent my power data from uploading to Strava when the two apps sync?

The reason I ask is that I would like to see my actual/human power output (which would be recorded on Garmin Connect), and I would also like to see what Strava estimates my power output to be, which would include my effort plus the motor's output, based on their formula.

  • I can think of a couple of approaches, neither of which is perfect.

    1) Record activity as normal, export FIT file, use FIT File Tools to strip power data from file and import to Strava. This has the disadvantages of being a manual process and requiring you to delete the first copy of the activity on strava (unless you want a duplicate.) (What I do is mark all activities on Strava as private by default, so things that sync from Garmin Connect aren't automatically visible.)

It might be okay for a one-off test.

    2) Record activity a different way: don't connect to the power meter natively (i.e. using the device settings), but use a third party Connect IQ data field like my Run Power (*) to connect to the power meter and record it with the app. Power recorded by apps isn't recognized by any site (including GC) as "real" power, so hopefully Strava will go ahead and calculate power for you. The downside here is GC won't recognize the recorded power as real power either, so it won't count towards any of your stats. You also won't be able to use power-based workouts or any other native power-based features.

(* Run Power is a full-screen data field that supports 6 metrics of your choice and various features for running with power, although It doesn't have to be used for running. To support recording power, you do need a watch that supports music, due to Garmin hardware limitations -- most watches just don't have enough memory for all the features.

Or you could use the much simpler ANT+ Power which can record power for all devices, but only displays a single metric: power. Unlike Run Power, ANT+ Power also supports Edge devices.)
