Multiple Garmin devices show different recovery times

i use 2 different garmin devices at the same time for my bike activities for some reasons. Both are mounted on the bike handlebar. They both show the same tracking data results with the exeption of the recovery time data after finishing the activity. My forerunner 935 shows in all cases the double value of my edge 130 plus. So the forrunner shows 32 hours recovery time and the edge 130plus shows 13 hours revovery time. This is significant.

I only sync the forunner 935 data with GC. I do not sync the edge plus to GC. The foreunner is 2 years older than the edge 130 plus.

What is the problem. How can i correct this situation? Which device calculates the right recovery data?

  • Since you don't sync both with GC they will probably have different pulse zone settings and user profiles. Do you use chest heart rate strap for both? If not then that is another reason for different values. I don't know if 935 uses sleep and stress to determine recovery times, but that might also be a reason.

Activate Physio True Up on both devices and let them both sync with Garmin Connect. Only save the activity on one of your devices. Dismiss the other.

  • THanks for your response. The devices are working properly. Garmin makes wrong recovery calculation. This is the problem.

  • Ok. So you have the pulse chest strap connected to both devices during your activity and they got the same heart rate settings with max pulse and pulse zones?

  • How should i do this else? Yes one belt and 2 devices :-)))). Nice question. As i wrote: they work correctly!!!! They sample each breath the same. Could they do it differently if they work correctly. Garmin is not calculating correctly the recovery times. Easy. There is no need for more questions. Do you have 2 devices? Try it. Ull see.

  • Since you are writing your questions here you are asking for support from fellow Garmin users. If you need support from Garmin you should ask Garmin Support: https://support.garmin.com/

There are many different ways you can do it and I'm just checking if you thought about if there are any differences in the setup and use. Ok. You are using the same pulse chest strap for both. Then there are the pulse settings and the user settings. Are they exactly the same for both devices?

Then there are Physio True Up. Do you get all you activities and recovery time synced from the 935 to the Edge? The recovery time depends on your previous recovery time. If you have recorded an activity on just the Forerunner the Edge will not now about it unless you use Physio True Up. That can cause the recovery time to be longer on the Forerunner.

I got an FR945 and Edge 1030 and I will try this and see what results I get. Very interesting. I got Physio True Up enabled so the recovery time from the Edge will sync to my Forerunner so they will always be in sync.

Using them both and saving the activities will probably mess up the recovery time but before the sync I will see if the calculations are the same.

  • Be careful: if you try this, your activities will be counted twice in your gc. This is the reason i have the edge as standalone display and not connected as i wrote before. And its a backup of all activities in case the forerunner fails. And this happens mostly on important activities f.e riding passo campologno. The garmin device can crash, or is loosing sensors not often but sometimes. So i use for my security and comfort adjusting the right displays two devices Always!!!

  • I did the test.

First I made sure that Physio True Up had synced so both devices had the same starting point. It took some time since the Edge is usually turned off. Maybe 5 minutes extra for syncing everything.

Then I did my ride. 30 km on the trainer. Both devices were connected to the same sensors: HRM-Tri, Vector 2 and Speed Sensor 2. I checked that both devices reported the same values.

    After the ride.

Both devices now say that I got 37 hours of recovery. I made sure that they hadn't synced yet so it is not affected by Physio True Up yet. This was right after the ride.

My conclusion is that it works and they do the same calculations, but you must sync them with Garmin Connect and let Physio True Up do the job before the ride so they have the same starting point.

Odd that VO2 max 52 is considered to be Excellent on 945 and Superior on Edge 1030.

  • how do you display the recovery time on your Garmin Edge device?

mine only display VO2max and Training Load.

  • strange, which garmin device are you using?

  • On 1030 it is below training load. Can you scroll down?
