Discontinued connection to PAI Health - why??

I use a fantastic app called PAI Health (Personal Activity Intelligence). I was now told by the PAI Health team that Garmin is refusing them to access Connect data through the API that Garmin provides after Feb 10th. Why on Earth would Garmin want to stop 3rd party apps to make use of their APIs?? Can you please elaborate on this for me? Do you want to force your clients to switch to Polar, Apple or (God forbid) Fitbit or whatever??

We cannot, since we are users just like you, and do not have the information. However, seeing that dozens of other services continue to use Garmin's API without problems, I guess there may be a problem on PAI's side - perhaps they somehow violated the conditions of use, or refused paying the license fees.

  • OK - thanks! I have clearly misunderstood the concept of this forum :-) But you quite succinctly point to the very core of my question: Lots of apps are using this API - it is for all intents and purposes an open API, although you do pay a fee. The PAI team maintain that the termination from Garmin came completely out of the blue; no reasons given, no warnings issued, not even a response to the repeated requests for explanation. So even if there IS a perfectly good reason like a breach of contract terms this is completely whack behaviour from Garmin. But I will try to find a Garmin cust support dude to complain to instead :-) Thanks again!

  • Well, I do not quite beleive that Garmin is shutting down the API for all 3rd parties, or that they singled out the PAI for no reason. The info you get from PAI is probably biased. Call the Support (find the number at https://support.garmin.com), and try to get their side of the story.

And please do not forget to report back here, for other PAI users to see.

  • As as user, you should own your own data.

You do - you can access it through Garmin Connect, or you can request the full dump of the data. Or you can avoid sending it to Garmin altogether and keep all the FIT files locally.

  • I also use PAI and really like it.  Did you get some answer from Garmin?

  • No not yet. Will post if I get anything, which I doubt...

  • Looks like Firstbeat has something called the Physical Activity Score. Garmin probably wants to introduce this score as a premium feature hence the (bad) decision to cut off access to PAI health which offers the same for free?

  • How is the info biased? They are not giving you information. They are merely giving you a score based on your heart rate data.

  • How is the info biased?

I was writing about the info that Garmin allegedly refused them the access to the API without any reason. I doubt there was no reason, if it ever happened, so that's why I recommended asking Garmin first, before judging.
