Privacy and activity name

There is a setting on the privacy page which permits to choose the activity name:

  • location + workout name
  • location + type
  • location + activity name
  • nothing

The location is already displayed which is problematic concerning the privacy even it is only the city name. (and in my case the city is a very small village) Why not also providing the possibility to display the workout name, the type or the activity name without a location?

  • If someone can see the activity name with the city name he/she can also view the map connected to your activity and that is a much bigger privacy concern. If you got a privacy concern you cannot allow anyone to see your activities at all. The naming is the least issue.

  • Wrong: you can hide an area with the privacy settings. In this case, no GPS information will be visible into it when sharing the activity.

  • You are right, but the area you can hide is just a 1 km radius from the point you want to hide and most pople will move outside that circle and a map will be generated.

"Create a privacy zone around an address, such as your home, to hide your start point on publicly shared activities. It’ll also hide your end point if you finish inside the zone. You’ll always see your full route, but others will only see the middle of the route."

  • You can add multiple zones and so cover much more.
It does not hide only the start and the end. It hides all points in the zones specified. In my case, I have a set of area which covers the complete village and the villages around. The other people  will not see any trace inside this area, only the portion that I'm leaving.

But this is not the topic about this post. It is about this location which is automatically added to the title.

  • Ok. I see that it can be used like that even though it is a special case and most people with such high demands on privacy will not show their training at all or just show it to their connections.

I suggest that you send you suggestion to Garmin: https://www.garmin.com/forms/ideas/

Or contact Garmin Support about it.

  • I did a test now with the privacy zones that might be interesting for some. I got a privacy zone around my home. I started an activity at home and walked out of the privacy zone and then back home but I didn't end the activity at home. Instead I walked out of the zone again and then back home. Even if I walked back into the privacy zone that part isn't hidden since I didn't end the activity there.

Only the starting and ending parts are hidden. The middle part isn't. Just as Garmin states in the description for the privacy zones, but my guess is that not all people think of what it actually means.

If you never leave the privacy zone or the combined overlapping zones nothing will be displayed in the map. Actually no map will be displayed at all.

If you sync you activities to other services remember to use the privacy zone feature there as well or don't make your activities public. The other services will otherwise show the full track.

  • A bit off topic, but BTW: the privacy zones are pretty much useless if entered at the critical point that you want to hide. That's because if someone would like to find where you live, it is enough to take several of your activities, where you leave the privacy zone in different directions (and also come back home from different directions), and by simple cross connecting of all those points, you can pinpoint the center of the privacy zone.

It means when you create a privacy zone, do not center it at the location you want to hide, but rather quite far away from it (I mean excentrically), otherwise you are implicitely disclosing it.

  • That's true and that's why I have selected several zones around.

Better would be to give  the possibility to share and activity without the map. We had also this discussion on the Stryd forum and they are athletes which do not want to share their activity with online coaches for this privacy reason. The workaround they have is to upload the activity using Stryd offline sync to the coach. Not very convenient....

  • As wrote, suggest it to Garmin through the link he posted. If there is a sufficient number of similar requests, Garmin may indeed add such option. However, do not bet on it, and do not expect any quick reaction - there are daily countless of diverse feature requests posted here on the forum alone (and certainly equally on that page too), so there is little chance that every one could be implemented quickly. Only the most frequently reoccuring ones have some chance to get the attention of the developpers.

  • I made it yesterday.
