Bad GPS reception pace? Recalculates?

Hi guys and gals :)

Maybe not the best forum, but i guess it calculates somewhere?
When i run in to an area with a little poorer GPS reception, ie trees overhanging in the forest or so.
My Pace on the watch can go way upp, from 5:00 ish /km, to 11:00 min per km for a little while.
Not really ideal.
But when i get out of the poor reception area, will the watch, or connect web, notice that i didn't at all run that slow since i arrived further ahead than interpreted before?

Or is the logged data not smart handled afterwards?

Any suggestions?

  • Ok, heres an activity, where i think that 14min/km in the latter third of the run is bonkers.
    connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/6126749249

here is one (same route as above) where it goes down to 11min/km when i get in to the wood after 8 min or so.
    connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/6147519131

Will just have them public for a while.

  • I did a quick 3k activity today, and the summary of the first k is hilarious:

    Laps: 1
    Time: 5:24.7
    Cumulative Time: 5:24.7
    Distance: 1.00
    Avg Pace: 5:25
    Avg HR: 117
    Max HR: 137
    Elev Gain: 2
    Elev Loss: 4
    Avg Run Cadence: 181
    Avg Stride Length: 1.02
    Calories: 45
    Avg Temperature: 18.0
    Best Pace: 7:12

How can my average pace be 5.25, and at the same time my best pace is 7:12? This mathematically makes no sense. Garmin should either recalculate everything, or recalculate nothing (or even better, find a better way to judge pace). I recorded the same run on my phone with Runkeeper, and it got the pace graph pretty much right.

  • Yea Drak, that is really not ok, i agree.

On my run today,  I think i got pretty ok readings over all, but i did "fartlek" so it not easy to have a feel for the real speed as it happens. But overall it felt good.
I did try to get clear skys above when i could, and tried to angle my watch towards the sky though, (but should you really have to do that?)

Anyhow i did recognize one thing.

I ran on a really narrow path, tried to really keep my watch angled towards the sky, but there it was just trees, so i got about 8min/km in pace, and i was slightly downwards angle on the path, and i held about 5:30/km speed, at least.. So it went on for a minute or two.

Then it opened up and i had clear skys above, and it was slightly upwards for a while, and i was in between intervalls and probably held 6:30/min speed to cool down a bit. But the clock kept med in 5:30 pace for a good minut or two, and theres no chance in hell that i had that speed.

So in this case it seems like the watch compensated. but who knows...
