merging gpx files

I accidentally pressed the lap button while backcountry skiing today and my garmin fenix 6 sapphire ended my ascent. So I started a new activity. I then did a second ascent without pressing any buttons and it was fine.

Did I miss a step when merging files? I followed the instructions on feub.net/.../ but I ended up with duplicates minus the activity label? Thanks for your help.

You could also try FIT file tools:

(Seems to me there's less chance of losing data when you manipulate files in their original format -- FIT -- and I've had good results…
