Can I export Garmin Challenge data for our running club for the year? One of our club run directors would like to compile spreadsheet of overall mileage
Yes, you can get the raw data of the leaderbords of individual Group Challenges by calling an URL formed in the following way:
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/proxy/groupchallenge-service/leaderboard/activity/group/88888888?&start=1&limit=2000&metricId=17&startDate=2020-12-28&endDate=2021-01-03&actTypeId=2&todayDate=2020-12-31
You have to enter the ID of your group instead of the 8888888, and you can change the dates, and the actTypeId number to get diverse types of Challenges.
The output is then in JSON format that can be imported into many spreadsheet programs directly, or you can convert it for example at http://convertcsv.com/json-to-csv.htm
Thanks for the quick reply, so in speaking to my run leader it seems an ad-hoc challenge is set up each month so in the URL of the challenge is connect.garmin.com/.../ and 32 digit hex string. I tried to replace 8888 with this number and set start and end date but got a PathParamException? Also what would the actTypeId be for running? Brilliant if you can help out, a

Sorry, I do not know what ad-hoc challenge is, and see no such option in my Group Challenges. The link I provided is for the regular Group Challenges (Steps, Walking, Running, Cycling, Swimming, or Calories), and the numeric ID is of a purely numeric type.
Edit: Sorry, I just see that I gave you a link for Weekly Leaderbords, not for the Challenges. The ID in the link is the Leaderbord ID. You can find the Leaderboard ID, when you go to Groups » Leaderboards, and select the corresponding Leaderboard (see the dropdown menu under the title Weekly Leaderboards.
For the ranking of the Challenges, there is a different link:
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/proxy/groupchallenge-service/groupchallenge/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX/players?&todayDate=2020-12-31&start=1&limit=10000
Enter the hexadeximal Challenge ID instead of the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, and adjust the dates accordingly. You do not need to change any other parameters, in this case
