All of history deleted after sync

Today I went for a run, the activity was saved to my Forerunner 225. Went I got back I synced it using the Garmin Express app, which said the sync was successful. When I opened the Garmin Connect webpage the new run was not there. After ejecting my watch I saw that not only was the newest activity missing, but my entire history was gone. The history still shows up on the Garmin Connect webpage (minus today's run), but it's gone from the watch. The GARMIN/ACTIVITY folder is empty. I am able to start a new activity and save it, the activity can be seen from the watch and in the GARMIN/ACTIVITY folder. But my entire history going back several years is gone.

What could be the reason for this and how can I avoid it in the future?

  • I should also note that the records and history on this phone are up to date. I can see from the weekly history that today's run was counted towards the time/distance for this week. But it (and all of the other activities are gone).

  • But my entire history going back several years is gone.
    The GARMIN/ACTIVITY folder is empty.

Did you keep all the history of several years on the watch? All data is being saved on the server, in your Garmin Connect account, there is no need keeping it on the watch. Up and then the folder needs to be cleaned up to make room for new activities (or for a software update). If you really need some of the old activities on the watch, you can export them from Garmin Connect Web (use the option Export Original), and upload it to the folder //GARMIN/Activity/.

  • The history is not just files in the Activity folder. The history are also Menu -> History -> Activities / Totals, and Widgets like Last Activity/Run/Ride/Swim. So it is a little bit more than just files. In case the full history disappeared it is not OK. In case only files are disappeared - it is more or less acceptable, however it can confuse that something silently just disappeared without any notification. Watch has its owner and doing something with personal files without a notification is a bad idea. Notification is not only a popup in Garmin Express with a message, it can be defined in manual or specification of the watch like "we hold only 14 days of history". Without such notification I can think that something went wrong and ask about this problem on a forum like  did. So is it normal that files/history just silently disappeared or not?

  • It is in the specification for the device: FR 225 got max 200 hours of activity data stored. Several years of training history cannot fit in the memory of any of Garmin's watches. Garmin Connect must be used to access the full training history.

It is normal that the oldest activities are removed silently if the activity memory is full.

  • You are right and seems you are answered to question.

  • That makes sense, but I would expect the oldest activities to be deleted from the watch. In my case every activity got deleted, including yesterday's which didn't get a chance to be uploaded to Garmin Connect.
