automatic assignment of equipment to activities

Why is automatic assignment of equipment to activities limited to just a few top-level categories? Also, if I assign "hiking" to my hiking shoes but then categorize the activity as mountain climbing - a sub-category of hiking, the activity not only gets assigned the shoes linked to hiking (which is how it should be working), but also gets assigned the equipment linked to "various/other" (which is the category I need to use for my tennis training, as Connect would not allow me to create an assignment rule for an activity type I have created myself)

Probably because not a sufficiently high number of users request the feature, and Garmin developers have other tasks with higher priority on their ToDo lists. Try suggesting it at https://www.garmin.com/forms/ideas/, it won't be seen here on the user forum by anyone from Garmin, and it may help moving the request to a higher priority level.
