Intensity minutes are not recording properly

Former Member

I have just done a long workout (rowing) and have the following times in heart rate zones

zone 5: 11:16

zone 4 : 20:26

zone 3: 50:47

zone 2:28:32

zone 1: 8:42

From that I got 78 intensity minutes.   58 moderate and 10 vigorous.

That doesn’t  seems to add up at all and I don’t understand ?

Can anyone shed any light  or theories as to how intensity minutes are calculated?

  • Can anyone shed any light  or theories as to how intensity minutes are calculated?

You can find the info in the suport document How Does the Intensity Minutes Feature Work on My Garmin Watch?

    Especially note the following paragraphs:

    • In order to earn intensity minutes credit, you must reach or exceed 10 consecutive minutes where either your step count rate or heart rate is elevated above the threshold that is considered moderate intensity.

    • Most devices with wrist-based heart rate senors will calculate intensity minutes by comparing your current heart rate to your average resting heart rate, but some devices have an option to base intensity minutes on heart rate zones. When using the HR Zones feature, you will earn intensity minutes credit when you reach or exceed 10 consecutive minutes of activity where your heart rate is at or above the HR Zones that you've set for Moderate or Vigorous-intensity.

    In other words:

    1. If there are peaks of HR shorter than 10 min, they won't count.
    2. Only some devices use HR Zones for the IM evaluation, the rest is using the ratio HR / avg RHR, hence the HR Zones are not really relevant
