Activity shows correct starting point, accurate distance, but no map.

My 945 connected to GPS and seemed to track fine during my run, but the map shows only a single dot where I started and no route whatsoever. This has never happened before. I haven't changed any settings. Any ideas?

Here's the activity: connect.garmin.com/.../5632202409

  • The Activity is private, so I cannot have a look at it, but I wonder how it can show the correct starting point if it shows no map? If there is no map, then either the activity is of a wrong type (i.e. an indoor activity), or the GPS was turned off in the settings, or the Ephemeris file is expired or damaged. Connect the watch with USB cable to the computer, and check for updates with Garmin Express. Read more about it here:

Sorry, activity is public now. I am similarly confused. It wasn’t an indoor running activity. It was the same activity type I always use.

  • Besides the EPO, it could be GPS shut down by the power manager, if your device has that feature, and if the battery power was low, or a problem with the data storage. As I wrote, try updating the EPO, and also clear up the folder //GARMIN/Activity. Then start a brief test activity to see whether it helped.

Ok thanks. I’ll give that a try. Is there anything I can do to recover the map from this activity? Or did it truly not record GPS data?

  • You can try downloading the activity file(s) and check it with FIT File Tools, or the FIT File Repair Tool, or with another similar tool for repairing FIT files, but I think the chance is dim.

  • +1 No map when cycling with Edge 830 because default setting is set to show power on map track.

OK if I change the setting (speed, altitude, etc).

Is it possible to change the default setting?

  • Is it possible to change the default setting?

No, it is not (at least not without hacking the source, and injecting some code).

  • I've had essentially the same issue in Garmin Connect, but in cycling. There is a map, but not line showing my route. This has been every since they added the power data (and I have a power meter; these data are there). Cannot see my route, but I can visualize it by sliding the mouse along the elevation graph below it and the black dot moves along the route on the map. I assumed Garmin was aware of this, but maybe they aren't.

  • It is a bug. Change to show Speed and you will see the track.

  • Great, where is that setting, I can't find it. Thanks!
