Getting Garmin Connect to recognize my Forerunner 945 (Because it won't for now)

I am frustrated because I love my 945, getting Garmin Connect on my computer to recognize my device (Getting the endless "Searching for device" alert) even though it shows my Garmin is connected. Because of this, I can't update music, choose which maps to upload etc. I have tried turning the computer on/off, taking off and adding my 945 that I have had for months as a new device, turning the 945 on/off repeatedly. Seriously. Thanks and hope everyone is staying as safe as possible.

Tony

  • Going by your picture, this looks like Garmin Express, not Garmin Connect. If this is on a Windows PC, when you plug the cable into your computer do you see the device listed as "Garmin Forerunner 945" in File Explorer under "Devices and drives"

To narrow down the the source of the issue, try plugging into a different port on your computer, then try with a different cable, then try using Garmin Express on a different computer. Try gently cleaning the contact points where the watch connects to the cable. If still problematic, could be an issue with the watch itself with corrupt data.

Seilogramp, you are exactly correct, it is Garmin Express that is killing me. I will try a different USB port and cable. Garmin Express on another computer is more tough because my music is on this computer. You did give me the idea of deleting and re-installing Garmin Express software though. Corrupt data, that is more scary. I appreciate it Sir!

  • See my post, I've added some things. Corrupt data is usually just deleting some of the history or courses off of the watch. Not so scary.

So I did find my computer is registering the Garmin. It was under under (Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers) and it shows as a Garmin USB GPS that is allegedly working normally. I am wondering if I am getting caught up in map updates to include many that I don't want because I live in CONUS.I would like to see how much memory I have left to pick maps I want and update music but am stuck at it keeps searching for the watch. Do you think reinstalling Express software would help? Thanks again BTW!

Should see it in File Explorer under "Devices and drives."

    On my Windows 10 machine...

Then you can drill down into the file structure of your forerunner.

Gotcha!!! Am yanking music out from there to make room, great call SG!

  • While you're in there, as long as you've already synced all your activities to Garmin Connect, it's a good idea to periodically delete the fit files within the \GARMIN\ACTIVITY folder.

I found them, what are those files exactly? By the dates I am assuming what I did on each day?

I saw that I only had about 200 MB free and the memory bar was red. I am guessing this was causing a loop of "what do I do, I am trying to synch but have no room." I am going to manually delete music from here to make room, any idea where the maps for Africa and Europe are? I guess this is one advantage to tele-working for me!

  • Those are your activities that you recorded on the watch. If you've already uploaded them to Garmin connect, there is no reason to maintain them on the watch.
