  • It would be very useful to be able to reverse the track in case you want to return to the point of origin at any given time,

In Garmin Connect you can indeed reverse the direction:

And on most Garmin devices having the Navigation feature, you can reverse the track directly in the navigation menu, or you can have the device navigating you back to the starting point.

I was talking about my GPS Garmin Edge 1030,  no Garmin watches. No option in menu to  reverse the track, nor does it indicate the direction of the route with arrows

  • Some of the watches with Course Guidance have "Do Course in Reverse." The Edge units do not have the same course guidance features as the watches.

If you have to do it only from your device, you can ride the course in any direction you wish. Just follow the course line.  However, to prevent the constant reminders to turn around you might want to change "Turn Guidance" to "Off" at your turnaround point.

Another option is to use Garmin Connect Mobile as  mentioned to reverse the course direction. Takes a few minutes to do this while you're out on the course, then send it to your edge.
