Activity map zoom in/out doesn't always refresh the map correctly

I keep having weird time with the zoom in/out. I start with normal activity window and then click the fullscreen icon. Unfortunately the map isn't refreshed in its whole, just the original rectangle. I need to try to move the map around and play with the zoom, in order to get the right zoom and properly scaled labels and the correct sharpness.

  • Are you using a Windows phone or did you intend to post this in the Garmin Connect Web forum?

    Moving thread.

  • The maps are served directly by Google (alternatively by HERE, or OpenStreetMaps), and Garmin has no influence on the maps loading. You'll have to contact directly Google, and ask them to improve the loading. Or your ISP, asking for a better bandwidth.

  • It has nothing to do with Google or ISP. It's the way Garmin uses Google Maps API. Probably the viewport isn't refreshed correctly when certain events happen like drag map

  • The content of the viewport is served directly by the map provider (by default Google). Garmin cannot influence it in any way. I know it, since I work with exactly the same Google API too. Practically all events triggered on the map are processed directly by Google, not by the app using the API.

  • I do too and somehow I've never experienced these problems, neither on other platforms that use Google Maps API. I still think it's worth checking

Google and HERE are direct, but OSM is served from a copy (that's why OSM on Connect is very outdated).

And actually Moseleyi is right that there is difference with google maps, when viewed on google website, and on connect. You can open it both ways and compare, that it loads differently.

It should be more tested - but after quick look:

if you have google maps after opening an activity, and then you enlarge the map to full screen, then there is a problem with loading. After opening full screen - change to other map, then change back to google, then zoom works ok.

It looks like the small view is still in effect after opening the full view and needs to be refreshed.

I do not see any. I get some empty rectangles only when on a slow connection, but I tested it extensively now (on a 100Mbps cable connection and a 144Mbps Wifi link to the router), and any kind of zooming is pretty instantenous.

  • Set map as google and reload an activity page, then open full screen - working small view moves to center, and tiles around it are static enlarged tiles from original small view and don't update (if you don't click anything).

This depends on browser's window size - if you do this all in smaller browser's window - then working part of the map after opening full screen is also smaller.

That's what I do. See the attached video. I zoom with the mouse wheel, no clicking on the map. Video is in real time view (not accelerated).

There are some gray rectangles visible just for a tiny fraction of a second after each re-zooming, just till the missing bitmaps load from the Google server. I can see some gray rectangles remaining on the screen only when on a miserable Internet connection, or during peak hours, when the download links are overloaded.

The window was in full screen mode on a display with the resolution of 1920x1080 pixels (I am attaching just a lowres resampled video). It looks as smooth as this even if I stretch the window across all my three HiRes monitors (total of 5760 x 1080 pixels).
