No data in Garmin ACTIVITY folder

I have lost an activity which Garmin is claiming has corrupted.

The run is showing on my watch but won't transfer over to the Connect App.

When I have connected to my laptop I can't seem to find the file to manually import the run from my Vivosport to Garmin Connect.

When I open the ACTIVITY folder there is no data there at all.

Should there not be all of my running activities showing in that folder?

I really want to get that run back so any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Neil

  • If the file was inadvertently deleted, you could use a file recovery program. However, the more you use your watch the less likely it is recoverable, as those are overwritten.

Turn the watch off, only turn it on after using one of the file recovery tools

    Tools for Windows PC

    Tools for Mac

  • Issue with that is there is no way to power down the device.

It's on the watch, I can see it in my recent activities on the device itself it simply won't transfer over to Connect App.

This is the second time it has happened in 2 months now and it's getting very frustrating

  • I can see it in my recent activities on the device

Well, originally you wrote: "When I open the ACTIVITY folder there is no data there at all.", which made most people including , and myself too, thinking you wrote the folder on the device is empty, hence the advice to use the file recovery tools. In fact, as I see now, you did not speak about the //GARMIN/ACTIVITY/ folder, but about the Activities screen of the app.

In such case, there are basically three possibilities:

    1. The BT synchronisation on the phone app does not work (the white circle around the watch symbol never closes) - in that case follow the tips in the Sync / Connection Troubleshooting Guide. Alternatively, you can sync the data with the GC account over the USB cable and Garmin Express on a compuiter, or manually by importing files from the device folder //GARMIN/ACTIVTY/ to the Import Data page of GC Web (in case of errors during the import, see the hint #3)

    2. When the synchronisation works (the white sync circle closes and turns green), but not all the data is appearing in your account, then it very probably means that your device is associated with multiple accounts, and a part of the data lands in the other account. It frequently happens for example when you reinstall the application, and inadvertently sign up a new account instead of signing into the original one. Follow the instructions from the support document Data is Missing from My Garmin Account After Syncing to resolve the issue.

    3. The storage (or a FIT file storing the Activity details or HR data and the steps data) is dammaged or full. Try backing up and deleting old files from the folder //GARMIN/Activity and //GARMIN/Monitor. Look up the last unsynced activities from the folder //GARMIN/Activity, and try importing them manually on the Import Data page of GC Web. If you get errors when trying to import them, try fixing the broken files by passing them through the Section Remover of FIT File Tools (without removing anything), and then importing again the repaired file(s).

... BTW, I do not quite believe Garmin has such device in their offer. Even devices with no buttons and no touchscreen (such as for example Vivofit) can be powered down by removing the battery, but the very most of them can be powered down by a button, or through the menu. Look up the manual of your device to see how it can be done on your model.

  • Yes I obviously know you can power down by removing the battery.

In regards to the folder comment, I meant the ACTIVITY folder on my laptop when I connect the device in an attempt to import the data from Device to Connect (which was Garmins suggestion)

When I do this the folder is completely empty.

    Hope that helps the confusion

I will try your suggestions thanks

Perhaps you are looking on a wrong place or with a wrong tool. If your watch shows some activities, the folder is certainly not empty, otherwise the watch would not show any. You best post the screenshot of all the folders in the //GARMIN/ main folder of the device open in a file manager, and then also the screenshot of the folder //GARMIN/ACTIVITY/

  • If I go onto import data on connect website on laptop, it brings up folders...

I click GARMIN and then ACTIVITY and there is nothing there.

There are files in NEWFILES but when I try to import them I get an error message saying to contact Support (who told me the file must be corrupt)

  • If I go onto import data on connect website on laptop, it brings up folders...

The files are not on a website, they are on the device. Connect your watch with the USB cable to the computer, then open File Explorer (if on a Windows machine), go to System, find you device there, open it, then open the GARMIN folder, then the ACTIVITY folder, make a screenshot of its content and post it here.

  • I have been for a run this morning...

Data transferred over to Connect fine.

    As requested screenshot

This is what I see with my Vivosport plugged in but when I plugged my wifes Vivoactive 3 in she has her last 3 activities showing in the folder on laptop.

Can't get my head around why I'm showing nothing to import over

  • Did you record the activity manually (starting and stopping on the watch), or do you use the autodetection (MoveIQ)? If you use MoveIQ, try recording any activity manually (you do not even need to leave the desk, just start any activity for a few seconds, the stop and save it). If it still does not appear in the ACTIIVTY folder, then try some of the tools for external storage repair and file recovary that  recommended in his first post, and scan the Garmin device with it.
