How to upload a GPX file with pauses?

This came about by accidentally saving a ride during a break, and having to record another activity for the rest.  I'm comfortable with editing GPX files and have manually merged them into one.

For uploading, I've tried the following:

1. Just uploading one big activity with big gaps between timestamps when the pauses occuer.  Garmin Connect treats the pauses as part of the activity, messing up the statistics and charts.

2. Splitting the activity using <trkseg> ... </trkseg>.  Garmin Connect ignores these and does the same as option 1.

3. Splitting the activity using <trk> ... </trk>.  Garmin uploads this as a number of different activities.

An example of such an upload is attached and can be seen at https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/5499672490

This shows an average speed of 3.9 km/h as the pauses are not recognised.

Is there any way of formatting the GPX file to get Garmin Connect to recognise the pauses?
