How did I earn the (bike) Climber badge??

A couple of days ago, I recorded a 42km bike ride.  As expected, I earned the 25 mile badge and the August Weekend 40km challenge.

However, I was surprised to see I also earned the first Climber badge - "climb 500 ft [152m] during a cyclying activity".  Anyone who knows Belgium may also be surprised... ;-)

The stats show an "elevation gain" of 167m but the minimum elevation is 107m and the maximum 165m.  So I only gained (climbed) 58m.

I can only think that:

1) Something has gone wrong.

2) It's not "climb 152m", but climb to 152m.

3) It's a cumulative total - i.e. if you climb 10m, then drop down 10m, then climb 10m again, it's counted as 20m (etc.)

If it's (2) then that doesn't seem right - what if you start at 151m?  You would earn the badge by lifting you bike up!  And in any case the stats don't show that.  Presumably it's (3) but that seems a bit weak.  Surely it should be earned by, in my example, going from 107m to 259m?

Any ideas?

  • As you wrote the Elevation Gain was 167m, hence you climbed 167m, which is more than 152m, hence the badge.

  • So it's a cumulative total?

EDIT: Yes - just realised by looking at my laps, it counts every gain in elevation and adds them up.  I assumed I had to climb 152m.

Ah well, makes doing those badges a lot easier.  The last one (610m) would be impossible here!

  • Well, you had to climb 152m (during a cycling activity). It doesn't say anywhere that the climb has to be continuous (i.e. one one go without any descents in between).

  • Sure.  I just thought that me going up and down 10/20m here and there over 40km and achieving the badge was less valid than another biker starting at 100m at the base of a mountain, riding up to the 251m summit, checking out the view and riding back down and failing to get the badge.

But like I said, with the highest points in Belgium being only 694m, 651m, 504m and 362m it would make the highest badge [almost] impossible otherwise. I'd been scouring topographical maps trying to figure just how I was going to be able to get even the lower ones!
