Low Calories Burnt Shown For Cycling

Former Member

Hi,

I use Garmin Fenix 5X for tracking my activities. I noticed that the Garmin Connect shows very low values for calories burnt for cycling. For instance, for 1 hour ride at 12 mph in mostly flat road, the  calorie burnt  is 212 Calories which is lower than the calories burnt during 2 mile run at about 6.7 mph. When I estimated the value using the Compendium of Physical Activities', I get about 450 Calories for the aforementioned cycling activity. The values for running and walking, calculated similarly, are in good agreement with that calculated by Garmin.

Can anyone suggest what is going in here?

Thanks,

Sudeep

  • Why not. The Calories burn depends on your heart rate, the average Resting Heart Rate, and the VO₂/anaerobic threshold (measured with Heart Rate Variability). In other words, if you have higher Calories burn during a run than during a ride, then it means higer HR was detected during the run than during the ride (or the Resting HR or the VO₂ values differed at given days)
