Active calories calculated incorrectly

Hi All,

I use Garmin Venu and I've noticed that my daily kcal are calculated incorrectly.

Today, I've been swimming and I burn 839 kcal, however my active kcal shows 350 kcal. My resting kcal is 2422, I swam about an hour , so resting kcal during swimming: 100 kcal

By my understanding active kcal should be at least 739 kcal.

I tried to find anything related to my issue, but I couldn't find any answer.

Below I attached two print screens, sorry for polish language, but I believe that data is understandable.

Thank you.

  • From the first screenshot it is not clear whether it refers to the same day, and at which time. Possibly the data from the activity were not fully synced and included. Rather post a screenshot of the page Menu » Health » Calories » Aug 25th, 2020

Thank you for the reply. Please see below the print screens from Garmin Connect, I've changed the language to English.

Yesterday, 25 Aug 2020, I burnt 839 calories just during swimming, however daily summary shows only 759 for all day.

  • That looks perfectly OK. The Swim activity shows 839 toal calories = 1 hour of Resting Calories (~100 kcal) + ~700 Active Calories. The total of Active Calories for the day showing 759 kcal looks perfectly credible  (~700 from the swim, and rest for the whole day from common non-logged physical activity)

On Tuesday I did also 11,7k steps and I had busy day at work, so I guess it's more than 59 activity calories. Please see printscreen.

I also asked support about this issue and received the reply: " it would depend on the activity as explained on the article, with the my day section that would be from daily use without the activity" , "you burnt 739 from swimming which would be your activity calories not active, your 759kcal would be from calories burnt outside of activities" , so I am a little bit confused.

  • "you burnt 739 from swimming which would be your activity calories not active, your 759kcal would be from calories burnt outside of activities" , so I am a little bit confused.

Why confused? It is exactly the same what I told you too. Activity Calories = Resting Metabolic Rate for the time of the activity + Active alories. Daily Active Calories are only the active part (without RMR). Steps are irrelevant for the calculation of your Active Calories. As long as your watch has a heart rate monitor, Calories are counted on the basis of the heart rate.

    Thank you

So basically, to be totally sure: Total Calories = Your Active Calories+ Resting Calories + (Activity Calories - Resting Calories during activities)

Total kcal for 25 Aug 2020:

    Total burnt kcal: 3181

    Resting kcal: 2422

    Active kcal: 759

    Kcal burnt during swimming: 839

Active kcal burnt during swimming: 739 (839 kcal -100 kcal (resting kcal during swimming))

    Total calories burnt on 25 Aug 2020 is: 2422 + 759 + (839-100) = 3920 ?

If my understanding is not correct could you please advise what is the correct calculation?

  • could you please advise what is the correct calculation?

Yes, of course: 2422 RMR kCal + 759 Active kCal = 3181 Total kCal

759 Active kCal = (839-100=739 for the swim) + 20 kCal (for non-logged physical activity)
