Garmin epo and epob

I have a Garmin Epix which has worked great up until around the 2020 New Year.  Ever since then I have struggled to have a watch that would acquire a position.  I have read numerous threads and support pages about an out of date epo file.  The guidance that Garmin provides to find the expiration via Settings -> System -> About does not report any data on epo that I can find.  My only success has been to delete the epo.bin and epob.bin files in my GPS folder.  Garmin support page indicated RemoteSW folder and to remove it.  I tried that as well, don't think it did anything.

So my question is this, with the known issues that Garmin is having at being able to update these files so that the watch works.  Is it worth investing in a new watch.  I don't have to do so yet but I am seriously contemplating looking at other options which sucks as I can say that every GPS I own to date Garmin.  2 handhelds, 2 plotters/depth sounders on the boat, total of 6 watches in my household, Active Captain app, BlueChart mobile app (completely discontinued). Ant sensors that I use for cycling.

Am I just finding the issues with epo files or are you all experiencing them and I think it is across the board?

I am looking at the InReach line but if the unit cannot get a position because of some stupid epo file, what good is an SOS without a position.

Any thoughts from others if they have contemplated anything similar?

  • When you delete the EPO file, you have to get the new one. I am not familiar with Epix, but most other devices get the EPO file each time they connect through the USB cable to Garmin Express on a computer. Updating over Bluetooth and the Garmin Connect Mobile works too, but only when you start an outdoor Activity and have a connected phone with mobile data near you.

Check the the folder //GARMIN/REMOTESW/ again a look at the data of the EPO file. If it is recent, it should be all right.
