Garmin connect not awarding me badges for activities

Twice now I have done activities which did not award me a badge for that activity.  Both times it has been an activity which was a limited time one from a Friday to a Sunday.  The first one was a 40k bike ride available from Friday 19th - Sunday 21st June and the second is advertised as walking 3 miles today (3rd ) to Sunday 5th July.  The cycling one was the most frustrating as I had cycled all that way (a long way for a novice cyclist like myself) only to discover that it wasn't awarded. When I did the same distance again on the Sunday 21st it finally awarded the badge. Today I walked 3 miles (which is a long way for me at the moment as I am recovering from achilles injury), only to find that, once again, it hasn't awarded the badge! Does that mean I am going to have to do the same all over again to ensure that I get the badge?

I did wonder if I have to manually join the badge/challenge but I have never had to do that in the past.  Normally any badges seem to be automatically awarded.  I only manually joined the 40K challenge via my phone when I stumbled across the fact that I could manually join it on my iphone and I joined it about 20- minutes after I had logged the activity to my Garmin Connect. I thought it would then award the badge but it didn't so I went out and rode another 40k on the Sunday.  The same thing happened with the walk today. It didn't register automatically so I went in on my phone and manually joined, expecting  it to award the badge but it didn't. Looks like I am going to have to risk my ankle health by walking a further 3 miles tomorrow!  

Can anyone help me out with what is going on, please?

    Yes, for the Challenge Badges, you have to explicitely join the Challenge before doing the activity, exactly as written in the badge description.

    I didn't discover this until I stumbled over the option to 'join' a challenge on my phone. Normally I only ever view my badges on my laptop. On there, it doesn't  give the option to 'join' any of the badges. If ever I click on any there is absolutely no option to manually join one and with the other challenges I always seemed to get them automatically so I presumed I would also  get  the above ones as soon as I did the activity.  I do think Garmin should allow the option of 'joining' a challenge both on the phone AND on the laptop.   Now I am aware, of course, I will make sure I go on to the phone to physically join if there is one that says 'join'  


    Also thought I would add that, after a bit of trawling on here, I managed to find another few posts of other people with the same problem and who had 'joined' after doing the activity.  Someone said that if I go in to the activity and edit the title or something, it will re-log it and so give me the points. I tried this and it did work  - yippeee!

    It does. On the Challenges page

    ooo thanks for that.  :-)   have never noticed the Challenges page for some reason . Only ever looked at the Badges page.  It's a  "Middle age" thing I think...
