TSS Calculation for Cycling (Average vs Cumulative)

Seems that the only graphs provided for TSS are averages for respective periods (monthly, weekly, etc....).

Although this provides some context to training stress, wouldn't it also be prudent to also provide cumulative TSS for each time period and not just averages?

If Connect already has this ability, my apologies, and would welcome any direction as to where that data is.

Most training sites have the cumulative activity.   Very useful if an athlete is just adding volume to their week at a moderate tempo just to get more miles in.   This scenario would dramatically bring the TSS average down, even thought the athlete has kept overall intensity up and just added more moderate volume to his/her plan.

Seems like this sort of info would be a great add to the platform.

  • I reported this to Garmin a couple of years ago and - after eventually understanding the point - they insisted it’s by design and said they wouldn’t be changing it.

It’s stupid and renders the measurement pointless, but they’re not going to change it. TSS is the proprietary calculation of the company behind TrainingPeaks, who obviously see it as a cumulative measure, but Garmin won’t align to it. Applying their logic, if you sleep 8 hours at night and then have a 2 hour nap in the afternoon, they should report you having slept 5 hours that day. Do they? Of course not.

  • Thanks, lj50....   that's unfortunate to read.... seems they have all the underlying data and that we would find it immensely useful....  hope they revisit their reasonings at some point and add it.... best

  • This is still so frustrating. I have to export my activities and use pivot tables to compare my weeks
