Segments not showing on my runs on Garmin Connect in Chrome

i don't know if this is just me or whenever I upload a run from my watch (Forerunner 620, I know an old watch) I don't get the segments tab at the bottom of the page in Garmin Connect on my laptop. I did a few weeks ago, and I purposely created a number of new segments, and ever since the tab just hasn't shown up. I do wonder if this has happened because Garmin are partnered with Strava, who have just made segments a premium feature, and so this has been removed. I know I can still go into the Training on the left hand side of the webpage and drill down to segments, but that is a lot more time consuming than just going to that from the run. Is this something that anyone else has noticed, is it just me, or that I'm using an old watch? I have read some old posts that say things can disappear and reappear almost randomly without any warning, but it is annoying as I've been using Garmin Connect a lot more lately and if this doesn't come back I'll have to look elsewhere.

  • I can see segments for most of my activities so it hasn't been removed.

What activity type are you using when you don't see segments?

In the app I only see segments if I've done any. In the web page I always see the Segments tab (except for some activity types that don't have segments which is everything but running and cycling).

In the GarminConnect Android app there is a view segments pane and I can see them, but I don't have a tab on my laptap on the site, even for runs that I could see them before. I wanted to add a few more, but without the tab it's difficult, if not impossible to do. The activity in question is a run. I only have a Garmin watch for running so would love to know if yours is for cycle ride rather than a run, although surely that shouldn't make any difference. Would love to know if anyone else has had this happen before, and whether they may have done an update that for whatever reason has made this tab not visible to me, but as someone who works in software development you'd think they have tests for that to stop that getting released. The fact you can see them is even more confusing. You see them on the website right? Not just in the app?

  • In Garmin Connect Web, the Segments tab is under the gaphs. There are the tabs Stats, Laps, Segments, and Time in Zones. Also make sure you did not accidentally disable Garmin Segments in the phone app (go to Menu » Training » Segments, tap the triple dot symbol up right, and verify that Garmin Segments are enebaled)

Ok, that seemed to work. I was doubting it at first as when I did what you suggested it was set to Strava Segments and prompted me to upgrrade my Strava account (making me think Garmin might be wanting me to do this). I changed it to Garmin Segments and after a while everything was back in the GarminConnect on my laptop. So, thanks so much for this. I didn't change this so this must have been an update to their app that changed this to be Strava Segments and to try to get me to upgrade that, hmm, Surely they can't be getting kickbacks from that? I still find it highly suspicious.

What has got me thinking though is that when I click on View Segments for my run in the phone app it lists the segments, but click on them and I just get my fastest time, not the time for the segment for that run, I can't find that anywhere. Anyway on the website version on my laptop I do have that information, which is all I really was after. I didn't really want to have to pay for what is essentially me having created my own segments for which I am supplying my own data from my runs for. If I wanted to compete against the world then I would be fine to pay, or if it is some smart feature they've developed that does some fancy analysis that helps me improve my times, or crafts a workout plan, or something like that from goals, but I don't want or need that. Anyway, thanks for resolving my issue. I hope anyone with the same issue can follow these instructions to get the segments back on their runs!!!

  • I still find it highly suspicious.

Yes, of course, it is a consipracy of Garmin and Strava to rip you off of your last money Smiley Just they forgot to remove the exact instructions how to use segments, from their Support website: Creating Segments for a Garmin Fitness Device

I don't actually blame Garmin. I appreciate that they are really more of a producer of hardware, which have a limited (and free to use) site that has been created to support the sales of this hardware. I don't think they are going to go any further than they have to have more than the basic functionality needed to attract people to their core business. I also don't really blame Strava for wanting to make more money out of the functionality they add to their app/site, they have to make money. I do have a problem when changes are made and we're not told what has been changed and why the functionality seems to have disappeared when I've made no changes to any settings. I do work in web development and I do know that sometimes these changes are made that do this, but having to look on a phone/tablet app to fix my desktop site settings just seems to take the biscuit, especially when I go into it and it has changed the setting to a 3rd party site's functionality, especially when that functionality isn't available to me. I personally think they just made the change without much testing and probably because not many people use Garmin Segments, especially when like me they were using Strava Segments up until a month ago.

One thing I might add that might have caused this, although it should have been a reason for changing any settings I have with Garmin is that I initially removed the link to Strava, but have since added it back in. Regardless of that though my settings on Garmin should have remained the same as they've always been so that my experience in using the Garmin Connect site remains the same. Surely the default should be Garmin (don't they want to advertise this functionality and have people use it) and If I then want to use Strava Segments I can go and change that setting myself? That might not have been what happened, who knows? Bugs can get introduced by mistake or even with good intention in some cases, but this was just so frustrating as I imagine there are a number of people exploring alternatives now that Strava has moved its analysis of people's own times (apart from current and PB) for segments behind a paywall.

(Update - I have check revoking access and reconnecting on the Strava site and it doesn't seem that this is the case, not now anyway, but that may have been fixed since, that once done it doesn't change it a second time, or that it needs a longer time to push a setting change through after revoking access, or that it was an update to the Garmin App)

To be perfectly honest I've just read your link and I don't actually use the segments feature on my watch, it doesn't have the functionality for live segments, which is what is described on that link, I just want to see what time I got for that segment this time compared to the ones for that segment in the last month or few months to see when I'm doing better and worse so I can correct my own training accordingly. I don't see this as a massive ask when I've spent the time creating the segments for this exact purpose.

Just to add to my earlier reply I haven't accidentally disabled this setting. I didn't even know it was there before you told me it was. I'm not even sure why I'd want to use Strava Segments on Garmin when Garmin should know that my devices can't use them!!!

  • I personally think they just made the change without much testing and probably because not many people use Garmin Segments

There was no change minimally the past 11 months that I am using Garmin. Possibly you just omitted to enable Segments in your Privacy Settings, or somehow managed to inadvertently disable the setting in another way.

And in contrary to what you think, there are apparently hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people using Garmin Segments - I can guess it by looking at the leaderboards on segments I pass through. They contain mostly several thousands of participants, despite being just in a 1M city. So it looks like it was not that difficult to set it up correctly, if so many users got it right without flooding the forum with requests.

Ok, let me clarify. When I said that not many people use Garmin segments I meant in comparison to Strava. I don't mean people don't use it, or that many people don't. If only 0.1% of all Garmin watch or power meters users use segments that is a hell of a lot of users that do. So I hope that clears that up.

I have had my Garmin Forerunner 620 for maybe 5 years now and I have looked at Garmin Connect from time to time before, but it wasn't my primary training app of choice. I've never really looked at Garmin Segments before Strava made their changes as I had chosen to use Strava instead. Now I've decided to look around and see if Garmin works for me and have had problems. How do I know that a lot of people don't use Garmin Segments, well when I look at my runs there are barely any segments, whereas on Strava there are loads. It is the number of segments that there are out there not that hundreds of people are tagged as having completed it that matters. It only takes one person to create a segment, those millions who complete it might not ever look or know that they have, so they aren't "using" Garmin segments. I never have before and I'm on them. There might be reasons for this, but I suspect it is because people use other apps or sites to use this kind of functionality, or it might just be that in my area not that many people happen to be using them.

When you say there has been no change over the past 11 months how do you know this exactly? Do you work at Garmin Connect development? As I think I have previously said I work in software development and I know from my experience that sometimes users are targeted so I may have just fitted that category of person with certain settings that was targeted. Just because you haven't been affected doesn't mean changes on the backend haven't been made. I'm not saying that's the case, but it happens in software development and business decisions made in eCommerce so could be the case.

I find it condescending that you claim that I just haven't set it up right, as it was working before, I didn't make any changes, and it disappeared. You seem to think that it's my fault that this happened when I did nothing to preempt it. I'm not having a go, but that's the way you came across. Many people may be having this issue, I suspect it is that not many use Garmin Segments. Maybe most people don't use the website version and the app and a change to the app affected the website, as they will have the same backend system controlling both and an update to one in the background has affected the other, who knows. Just because no one else has mentioned it on here doesn't mean others haven't noticed this as well, and it is a fairly recent thing so maybe most people just haven't noticed, or it just isn't important to them, as I've mentioned above. As I said before thanks for all your help, in correcting the issue that I didn't make any change to make happen, and hope you can help many more people like you have me.

  • When you say there has been no change over the past 11 months how do you know this exactly? Do you work at Garmin Connect development?

No, but my Segments work since day one, and it did not change during those 11 months. And similalrly, I monitor the forum very closely, and did not see any surge of complaints regarding Segments stopping to work, which would be certainly the case if there were any new change in their handling. Any smallest change in the interface always triggers a big surge of requests here on the forums.
