Use elevation data from imported GPX or TCX?

Is it possible to force Garmin Connect to use the elevation data present in the GPX or TCX file?

It looks like the data I get with my FR245M is completely off, with elevation correction enabled or without. For example there is a steep hill in my run, but it shows as almost flat in Garmin Connect. I tried to look at the same in Strava and it's closer to reality.

But if I import the course from Strava as GPX or TCX, Garmin Connect will still show the "original" elevation data. I opened up the file and it's clear that the curve does not match the elevation data in the GPX or TCX file.

I'd like to use the correct elevation data in order to make a proper PacePro plan, is there a way to do this?

  • Are you importing the GPX file as an Activity (through the Import Data page), or as a Course (on the Courses page)? And do you export the GPX file in Strava from the original Activity, or did you create it? Did you try designing the Course directly in GC from the scratch (not from an existing Activity), or in an external tool (like for example plotaroute.com)?

  • I tried several of these. Just now I actually drew from scratch in Strava the route and imported that as TCX to GC, same problem. GC insists the elevation is 136m and flat, where Strava says it starts from 127m and climbs to 150m, which I can agree, because there is a steep hill in the route.

  • Make the course public, and post the link to it, so that we can have a look at it

  • Here's one course that is even better example. I haven't actually run this one, but you can see the elevation data in GC
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/35434500

As you can see from the curve in GC, first 500m is pretty much flat, while in reality it's all uphill. You can see this in Google Maps for example: https://goo.gl/maps/eyPad2FcHgSgVN5t7 if you checkout street view heading to west.

  • Yes, indeed, nothing seems to help - I tried creating the same track with the right elevation profile in an external tool, and importing it in different file formats, with various options, and under all available map systems (Google, HERE, OpenStreetMap), but the elevation gain is always set incorretly. You'll need to report it to Garmin Support, and hope they fix it.

  • This manual way works. Copy the .gpx to device folder e.g. \fenix 6X Pro\Primary\GARMIN\NewFiles. It will we available as a route via device. Seems its not accessable thou in the connect app/web.
