Problems Importing Fitbit Activity Data

Former Member
Former Member

I am trying to upload activity data originally recorded on a Fitbit Inspire watch to add to my account. I have successfully exported the data from the Fitbit website and it appears that this should be quite easy to import with the import option available in Garmin connect.

When I import, Garmin connect recognises the file is a Fitbit one and prompts me for date format etc. It then either gives me an Import Error message or says Import Complete but does not add any activities to the account. I have tried csv and xls format, only exporting data on days when I know there are no activities logged, importing to different accounts, only exporting activity data. All with no success.

Does anyone have any suggestions to help? If not it will be manual upload time.

Hopefully I have added the Fitbit data file to my query.

  • Could you post a sample file here? I'll try to see whether I can find out something. You can zip all format variants of the same activity, and then upload the zip file here using the function Insert » Insert image/video/file » From - File Upload

Sorry Trux - I couldn't get a zip, xls, csv or text file format to upload. Any other ideas?

  • If you use the way I described, you can upload zip files fine (I just retested it). It does not work for most other formats, though, so use a zip archive with the extension .zip. If not, place the file on any public file sharing server, and post the link to it here.

Thanks Trux - still can't get the import option to accept a .zip file. Jut gives an error message.

Anyway - have made some progress in understanding what is going on. Garmin is importing the data but the fitbit output is not identifying any difference between running or walking (steps).

Garmin is therefore importing the data but putting it under the Steps category.

Fitbit has a tcx output that you can use for individual activities, but when these import as runs they have blank data other than the date.

Thanks for your offer of help. Manual entry if I can be bothered!

Hello, Im also struggling with Import data from Fitbit to Garmin, I have 3,5 years so I rather not import manually all sleep and activities.

I did export a csv file for each month and import without a problem when I clicked to export . I get the steps and I also get 9 front of my weight. I'm to heavy, but fortunately I'm not 9000 kg+

I did export Body, Food, Activities and sleep and it looked Ok. But only 9000+ kg came in and the steps. No sleep and no activities. I could maybe use tapiriik to sync activities with gps data, but how can I import my last 3,5 years sleep data?

If I only export the sleep data from one month into a csv och Excel I can't import as I get an error.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Happy I found your query Ian-Clayton, and hope it is Ok for you that I also ask for help here. Maybe you can try tapiriik if you want to sync you gps activity?

  • Hey everyone,

I'm having the same issue. I'm getting .CSV and .JSON files. I converted some .CSV to Excel files just for fun, and it wouldn't take those either. Any suggestions? This looks like it's a redundant issue.

I wrote to Garmin support about this few days ago, no reply so far Disappointed

  • Hi HallaSig!

I think I figured it out. Are you trying to export all of your data at once, or just the 31-day range?

What worked for me was choosing a custom range spanning the allowable 31 days and exporting that month by month. Then I was able to add it to Garmin Connect and it loaded just fine. I hope this is helpful for you!
