StreetPilot 2720 Software/Maps

I have two 2720s, both bought on eBay. The first unit (bought about a year ago) has worked flawlessly (including on a long European trip), but I've recently noticed that whilst the time and navigation functions continue to work fine, the date shown is wrong. It's showing dates in 2000 (20 October as I write). It may of course have always been like this, and I've only just noticed it, or it could have been affected by the most recent date rollover (earlier this year?) I've contacted Garmin support and posted on a couple of GPS forums, but without success. I've done two hard resets and reinstalled software v7.20, all to no avail. I can live with this, as the only practical casualty seems to be accurate daylight saving times.

However, I've very recently bought a second unit and to my initial delight no such problem exists! Everything, including date, is as it should be. It also has the last iteration (v7.20) of the software. Naturally, I thought, right, the new unit will be the primary one and I'll keep the original as a backup/spare. But a new problem manifests itself! On the original (loaded with City Navigator NT Europe v9) I've got around 524MB of supplementary map space - quite useful, as I like to use selected OpenStreetMap maps for extra detail. The new unit (has City Navigator 2010.10 installed), however, has only around 140MB of additional map space. I'm assuming that the more recent City Navigator mapset is taking up more storage room, and if so, I suppose that the extra Europe-wide coverage/detail is a price worth paying, albeit at the expense of room for OSM maps.

In summary, I have two questions:

1. Is it possible to correct the date on the original unit? Why would the two supposedly identical units differ in this respect?

2. Given that I can't find any way to get the units into mass storage mode, is there any way to 'tweak' the additional map storage?

Thanks in advance for any wisdom!
