heart rate when doing activity only

Former Member

a question please (or maybe a suggestion)

why it's not possible to make the heart rate turn on when doing activity automatically.

I mean why do we have to have to turn it on manually (if it's off) before the activity, and then turn it off after that

I don't want to use my wrist hear rate all the time, I would rather have more battery that keeping this feature on.

all smartwatches turn on the heart rate on automatically when you start an activity, otherwise it will be useless, and you won't be able to know the calories burned.

however, Garmin is making this really stupid and they are basically fitness trackers before being a "smartwatch"

is there anyway to fix this? or is there anyone who can listen to us, and make this possible in a future update?

P.S: I have the Garmin Vivoactive 4S

it's really annoying me.

any help would be appreciated

  • The problems is that Garmin relies on the round-the-clock HR monitoring with many of its principal features like Calories calculation, daily statistics, stress monitoring, body battery, VO₂Max, Training Effect, etc, etc. It needs sampling your HR continously also during the periods of rest, and getting the average resting HR values, and resting HR Variability data, to be able correctly analyzing your activities.

So turning on the HRM only during actvities would change the smart watch into a stupid HRM, and I doubt little bit Garmin will be willing to go in that direction.

but still, they should have that option. it's essential in every smart watch.

actually what is stupid, is to keep the heart rate off and not turn it on when starting an activity. I mean come on, the point of the workout is to know how many calories you are burning.

by the way, do you know what is the difference in battery life when the heart rate is turned on, and when it's off?

    thank you

  • I mean come on, the point of the workout is to know how many calories you are burning.

Just because of this. The watch needs to record your average resting heart-rate, to measure the calories you are burning during the exercise. So if the HRM were not active round the clock, you'd not get correct values for the activity Calories burn.
