An exercise bike selection

I have been using the recumbent biking selection to register my time on a stationary recumbent exercise bike. I suspect that the calorie readings I get from Garmin for my exercise are inflated. The bike that I use registers calorie readings a third of the ones Garmin shows. I wish that there was a reading for a stationary bike.

  • Garmin uses your heart rate to calcualte the Calories. The bike just estimates it from the power you exercise on the pedals. It does not include the RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate), and it also does not include the Calories the rest of your body burns (arms, body, neck, back,....). So it is quite natural that Garmin shows significantly higher numbers, since it reports what your body burns in total, not only how much energy it spends on pedalling.

  • The only way to get really accurate calorie counts for cycling is to use a power meter. Can you replace the pedals on your stationary bike with power meter pedals?
