Edge 520 no longer recognized in Garmin Connect

After changing the battery (Newpower99) in my Edge 520, it is no longer seen in Garmin Connect when I plug in via usb to update it.  I deleted it and tried to re-instal and it is not recognized as a device (I tried multiple cords and the unit charges, records data and function normally), but is no longer recognized in Connect, so unable to add updates that are listed as available.  Any thoughts/solutions?

  • Try adding the device again, following the installation instructions from the user manual of your device. I am not familair with Edge, but on most devices you initialize the pairing from the device. Also try using Garmin Express for getting updates over the USB cable.

  • I have the same problem. I can charge the garmin, but I can no longer load new routes onto the device (even after deleting a bunch of routes).  The desktop computer doesn't show a garmin drive any more.  Is it possible the data cord (garmin original) has stopped working, or is it more likely something with the garmin edge 520?

Update:  I was never able to get the Edge 520 to be recognized again in Garmin Connect after I changed out the battery. I was able to charge and use it for about 5 uses and then I experienced epic failure. The unit would power up but shut off after several seconds. After trying multiple times with complete re-sets, I have had no luck and have declared the unit DOA. Thought the new battery would solve my issues but it appears to be circuitry issues and not solely a power issue. Maybe I was at the end of it’s life cycle (don’t remember when I bought it).  Since I have already committed to the Garmin platform with other devices, I have replaced it with the Edge 830 unit. We shall see how it goes.

  • Mine charges up fine, and records, but I too can’t get garmin connect or my computer to recognize the garmin drive. So no way of loading new routes onto the unit. I think the prongs are slightly bent. I don’t know which prongs function in which way, but it seems to charge up. Good luck with your edge 830

  • can’t get garmin connect or my computer to recognize the garmin drive

If you're trying to send a course to your device, you can create on Garmin Connect Web, then using Garmin Connect Mobile on your phone, transfer it to your Edge. This would be a workaround for any issues you're having with the cable and prongs.

  • Thank you for the tip. How do you upload a tcx file someone else made e.g. on ridewgpx? The only way I know how is to plug it in and transfer :(

  • I figured it out. In the online garmin connect, you can upload a tcx file then send to your device. Thanks!
