Net Calorie Calculation

1. Why is daily goal and resting calories so different?  I was under the impression that daily goal was based on bmr.  Are RMR and BMR calculated differently?

2. Why are RMR calories not included in the net calorie calculations?  Aren't those calories burned?  Shouldn't the net calories include calories you burn at rest and not just active calories?  Don't calories you consume get burned while at rest?

Slightly yes. Info from Garmin Connect:

"Your RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) is the daily calorie count your body burns when it is in a sedentary, unstressed, and awake state. Resting calories consist of your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), the minimum calories required to support your body’s basic physiological needs and based on your age, height, weight, and gender, plus an estimate of those calories required for activities like digestion and being mentally alert."

Why are RMR calories not included in the net calorie calculations?

    From Garmin's Calorie Terminology:

    "Net Calories
Take all the calories that were consumed, then subtract all the calories burned (a combination of active and resting calories), get your net calorie figure for the day."

No. My weight is calculated daily and the daily goal is set automatically by Garmin.  I suspect the daily goal might be taking into account the weight goal (lower) and setting a goal that creates a deficit from my rmr callories.

Yes, that would make sense. Calories burned is a combination of active and resting calories.  But this is not what's being displayed.  It is currently showing Net= consumed - ACTIVE.  It is not including resting in the net. It's only using active calories.

That's exactly what I wrote - if your current weigh is not identical to your Weight Goal, the Calories goal cannot be identical to RMR. it must adjust accordingly.

Yes, you are right, indeed. I never really looked at it, so did not notice it. I recommend reporting it to Garmin Support - they won't see it here on the user forum.

Thanks.  I guess what confused me is that there is nothing in the documentation that says that the daily goal is calculated using the the goal weight.

I'll file a ticket with garmin on the other.  Thanks

Send them also the quote from their own support document (and the link to it), because otherwise that will argue, that it is so by design, and that it is correct.
