Why can't I manually add my bike to activities that existed before the automatically add bike option was added?

I did a few rides before adding my bike to the Gear list. I set it so all future rides automatically add the bike. How can I edit the prior activities to add the bike to the activity Gear? I have tried from the main edit page and the bike is not listed as gear. I tried the extended edit option in the upper right side options and I can add the bike there but it does not save the gear assignment as part of the update. I tried also on the mobile IOS app and no dice there.

An activity may be assigned a gear only if the gear already existed at the time of the activity. Hence if you created gear with the date of the fist use for example on 2020/01/01, no activities older than that can use that gear. You need to set the right starting date of the gear when creating it. And you cannot edit the starting date later, you really need to do it when creating the gear. So if you did not set it correctly, delete the gear, and create it again with the right date.
