Active calories

Is there a way to view active calories for each specific exercise instead of as a whole throughout the day?

  • Yes. Calories should be visible when tapping on the details of the exercise.

  • The OP said -active- calories and, like him, I was looking for them.

You can have the total for the day, which is the sum of active calories from the activity and all the rest of movements beside rest.

On my wife’s Apple Watch for each activity is clearly reported both total calories and active ones. On the standard app!

    Such missing feature is unexplainable.

  • You can see Calories burned during an activity, on the Activity screen. However, this value contains also the RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate). If you want to know just the "active" part of the Calories burned during the activity, you just need to deduce the RMR from the amount.

For example if you have a Running activity showing 396 kcal burned during 30 minutes, look up your Resting Calories on the Calories In/Out page for a complete day (let's say 1794 kcal), then the active part of the Activity Calories would be as follows:

    active Activity Calories = Activity Calories - Activity minutes * Daily Resting Calories / (24*60) = 396 - 30*1794 / 24*60) = 358.6 kcal

However, it is simpler just getting used to look and compare the total Activity Calories. Considering just the active part in your calculations might be confusing. But if you, for some reason, really need to see just the active part of each activity separately, you can suggest the feature to Garmin through this form.

  • Thanks a lot trux for the detailed explanation, but I did already know that Slight smile

It’s astonishing to me that withing the tens of measurement provided there’s no active calories.

I don’t agree it’s not that useful to look for the active component of the value. It’s not my case but for people struggling with weight loss active calories make all the difference. In fact you can track 2 hours of rest on bed faking any indoor activity and you’ll still get calories burnt because of… living! Slight smile

  • If someone struggles with weight loss, then it is important to watch the balance (resp. a slight imbalance) between Calories consumed and burned. In that case you need to know how much you burn including the RMR. You do not eat separately passive and active Calories. And for seeing the Calories you burn over the RMR, you have the Daily Active Calories. They include also all physical activity, not logged as a Garmin Activity event, but it does not mean it should not count.

So far the reporting used by Garmin makes sense to me, but as I wrote, if you want to have the active part of the Calories burned during the Activity reported among the details of the Activity, then request it through the suggestion form I linked in my previous post. It is unlikely anyone from Garmin would spot your demand here, on the user forum.

I thought the same. I also have an Apple Watch and it gives the breakdown per activity. I thought for sure I had to be missing something.
