Is is possible to create a challenge in Garmin Connect and track my daily progress against it? For those familiar, I currently have done this on the 'My Virtual Mission' app, where every ride contributes progress to completing the overall massivch

Is is possible to create a challenge in Garmin Connect, such as riding across the country, similar to that of My Virtual Mission, where every ride contributes to completing the challenge? I've been really enjoying putting in 30-40 km's a day on the indoor trainer, or riding and running outside where my daily distances contribute to my overall goal of riding across Canada.  Does anyone know if this type of function is available in Garmin Connect or Strava?  The My Virtual Mission app is free for 30 days and was great, but before I pay for premium  to continue I was hoping to see if my existing Apps can track my progress like this.

  • You can, for example, create a goal of riding 10.000 miles (or whatever else distance you want), and then following how many miles you already did.

  • Thank you , but there is no way to set a specific geographic route to follow that you know of?

  • No, I do not think so. You could perhaps create a series of courses, that you would then follow, but it is probably not what you are looking for.

  • Well, there perhaps might be a way pretty close to what you want, but I am not sure whether the device and the system would cope with it. You better try it first with a shorter distance:

You could start an activity with the support of Live Track, and then, each day, instead of stopping and saving the activity, you would just pause it, with the command "Resume Later", and resumed it on the next day. In this way, all the trip would be recorded as a single huge activity. Although you could not review the activity before it was stopped and saved, you could still review all passed days on the Live Track map.

As I wrote, there is a risk, that at some point, either the device or the Live Track server fails (I never tried that huge activity), and the activity may get lost before you save it. Though if  you enable the option "Extend Live Track", the completed data would remain accessible on the Live Track server, and there is a way to read all the details, incl. distance, pace, HR, elevation, etc.

Additionally, with the Live Track, also other people could follow your progress. You could even share it somewhere on your website, or social media

  • Perhaps, to avoid losing the activities of individual days, in case the device with the big activity fails at some point, you could use two devices (i.e. Edge and a watch). Using one for the individual daily activites, and the other one for the common huge activity for all the trip. Just make sure you select a device with sufficiently big storage. Older models might not have enough storage room for such a huge activity.
